    Hey all,

I just put an order in for the m11x with 4gb of ram but with the older processor. how much of a performance difference is it compared to the the i5 and i7 processors and is it possible to replace the processors later on?

    Thanks

You won't have noticed much of a performance difference unless you were doing CPU-intensive tasks like video-encoding or playing CPU-limiting games (of which the vast majority are not). And now with the pinmod which unlocks the R1's overclocking potential, once your warranty runs out, it'll be a great way to give it an extra boost.

And no you cannot replace the CPU.

you got a good deal for the R1 new...best deal i could find for my R1 was the same...a refurnished R2 with i5 would go for about the same...but thats a personal choice...i preferred the "new" over the better CPU...and as roxxor said you should not find much diff unless using over taxing the CPU apps

Dell's offering a 20% discount on refurb units. You will most certainly pay less if you decide to go this route. That said, not everyone wants a refurb. If you fall within this camp then you will have a hard time getting a new m11x for less then what you paid.

    Cheers

wait you bought m11x r1? with core 2 duo

where'd you find it new for so cheap?

refurbished ones are more expensive, but drop to around that price with the 20% coupon

the cheapest refubished i5/i7 is about 1000.

FSX is very cpu demanding so thats one that wouldn't work to well but even with an i7 I am only getting 20 fps at JFK

The R1 is a great computer and you got a very good price for a new unit. I have a R1 and I love it.

If you want to check out the 20% off deal that previous posters have mentioned the coupon code is BP6SM900JMH74L .

If you want a refurbished i5, there are pros and cons to both models so I am in no way saying you should cancel your order and get an i5, then go check out what's available. The outlet computers change constantly so you really have to watch them for exactly what you're looking for.

Go to the dell outlet site (google). After you've selected m11x you'll find an option on the left most column to filter for m11xr2. That will up any i cores currently available.

    Hehe woman actually :p

I couldnt find it at first either, I had seen an r2 for $799 - but when I went back to look it wasn't there, the cheapest was $919. Turns out Certified Refurbished and Previously Ordered New were both checked, so it was the one laptop that wouldn't show? I dunno, mightve been your case too :(

For the money that is an awesome deal - trick it out by the guidelines for Throttlestop, overclocking, etc and you will have a rockin' little monster!

I like the R1 better than the R2. Optimus sounds like a smoking pile of garbage and all that throttlestop garbage and other crap R2 users have to do sounds terrible.

Mine was 608.83 shipped after taxes but I got several deals including employee discount, black friday deal, free shipping, and some other discount too.

I agree xarthos... I too like the ability for me to handle the GFX switching vs Optimus as well as the 1+ hour off plug I get because of that. I was over at an indoor playground with my twin 6 yr olds on Saturday from 1:30pm till 7:00pm and left with still 30% on the battery.

The person next to me when he left said that his laptop wold have died at the 4 hour mark and when he looked over and saw a little under 50% left on the battery he asked me where the heck can he get my laptop. ( I had the lights off so the thing looked quite professional and SMALL!)

R1 OC'ed is plenty for what I use the laptop for with the least amount of hassel.

Xarthos, you don't HAVE to do these things, such as Throttlestop and the R2 exceeds the R1, that is really the only thing if you want to unlock the TRUE potential of the i-series that is gimped by Dell. Optimus is a movement in the industry, like it or not, for mobile platforms, and all you do is whitelist to make sure the right GPU is selected for your game profile and it's done. It may "sound terrible" but it takes very little time to get the most out of your system, and I got news, R1's need some care and feeding to get the most out of too.

I have both, they are both great, but the i-series really is better all the way around with the possible exception of lesser battery life, but you can easily adjust power profiles etc to get nearly the same. Not knocking your decision to opt for an R1, but lets not go so far as to refer to the new technology as "garbage", that is a bit much.

I can't believe how fast the R2's went from the outlet. There was only two left when I checked last night and the day prior to last night had full pages.

In three hours between 3:30 and 6:30 they were all sold that day, when that code hit the boards.

That's the part I'm worried about, whether or not to use TS and OC ... Personally I don't know enough about it all, but it seems to me it was made that way for a reason? I don't want to mess it up :(

My husband is a video game programmer and wasn't too comfortable with the idea either, but said he'd research it a little to help me figure out whether or not to give it a shot.. I'm a photographer and so, more cpu performance for me would be excellent. Tempted to invest in an SSD as well..

I can't wait until it gets here though, 2 more days *sigh*

Overclocking is built into the system - ie/it's a "feature". There are no safety concerns, nor concerns about voiding warranties. It's a legitimate way of increasing the performance of this machine by design.

The reason TS has to be used in conjunction with overclocking is because of a design flaw. Dell forgot that overclocking would make these CPUs draw more power, and as such they reach predetermined powerlimits which were designed to function at normal speeds. In essence, Dell just forgot to readjust those limits automatically when you overclock. That's what TS allows you to do. I recommend you (and/or your husband) conduct your research in the TS thread.

Oh, yeah, sorry - I guess I was mostly referring to TS, and not so much the overclocking. Though from what I've read so far of the TS thread, to my understanding (which could be way off base) OC'ing seems almost pointless if you don't use TS?

If Dell had the predetermined power limits set at what they are though, wouldn't that be for a reason? That's where I personally get confused (hubs hasnt really had time to check into it due to crunch at work). I need to keep reading the thread, I'll probably learn more and my questions may already be in there, its just a long one! Ah well, I have two more days to get through it before the m11x arrives *chuckle*
