Is your M11x a primary laptop or secondary?

Just wondering if your M11x is used as your primary laptop or as a secondary as in you already have another, most likely larger and/or more powerful notebook?

I forgot to add that when I first bought the M11x I was looking for a "netbook". I thought the M11x was so much bigger when I finally got it in my hands, but after comparing it with traditional 11.6" or 12.1" netbooks, it's not really much bigger at all. It's just a little deeper, and the thickness is consistent throughout and doesn't taper down like most other laptops.

I wanted a netbook also but after being unhappy with everything on the market I started looking into the M11X. This is my primary "laptop" but I have a DELL XPS 625 desktop that is fully maxed out and my primary computer.

M11x is my primary now. Been on the netbook for over a year and really wanted more screen real estate. So I was looking at 13" but after getting the m11x I'm really glad I didn't go bigger.

Yeah, there are some nice 13" lappy's out there, but they are still a bit bigger and have comparable if not lesser specs, for more money, at least what I bought mine for. I'm still vascillating whether or not to return it, I still have like 5 days left, because it is $300+ dollars more than a normal 11.6 or 12" netbook laptop (at $500) but it handles everything so well.

I use my M11x as my secondary machine. I take this one when I am on the go and when I am at home it sits on the desk running my IM clients. While I am home gaming I run Skype for voice chat on it.

Having this unit will let me leave my big machine at home when travel and still let me play my games on the road.

This will be considered my primary personal laptop (have a work laptop - 14" - as well). Wanted something this small, but more powerful than the 11z I have (primarily for the kids).

12"-13" is a little too large for my tastes (well - 12" is borderline - but there's nothing out there that even comes close for the price/performance currently).

Some people wonder "why" all the hype until they realize how powerful the thing really is. Putting an SSD in the thing makes it scream BTW...

Are SSDs really all they are cracked up to be? My dad says its still pretty untested technology for its pretty steep price?

And the M11x is going to be primary when i order it when the dell reps come back to the phones :D

My M11x is my primary laptop now. I was using a 15.4" Gateway with a ATI 2600 XT in it awhile but hated the battery life and size. So my sister lent me her Asus EEE netbook she wasn't using anymore. I was using that for a semester so far and by chance saw the coupon stacking savings of the M11x and just had to get that.

My main pc though is the I7 920 desktop I made myself that is in a Antec P180 mini using Asus Rampage Gene II, 6 gb ram, 3 hds for a total of just shy of 3 tb space, and a HD 4850 512 meg. My monitor is a Dell 2407WFP A03 rev. I am waiting for the next graphic card refresh before I replace the HD 4850. It is the only thing holding my system back outside of getting a SSD which I am waiting for to hit $200 for a 128ish gb one.

Technically it's my primary laptop in that it's my only laptop lol. If we're speaking about computers, then it would be "primary" since I do most of my daily activities on it and save the desktop for power use. The desktop drains so much power that it should take as many breaks as possible when not in use lol.

M11x is my secondary. My primary is still my Inspiron 1720 in the sig. I just need more screen for it to be my primary. I'm currently in between M17x's and that will be my primary. But for gaming, the M11x is my primary.

    Why you may ask?

Because I have a USB/PS2 controller and can lay in bed with the m11x propped up on my knees with nice headphones on and kill it in some drift competitions on Need for Speed Shift. :D It's like having a portable gaming system. I bring it to work everyday and bust it out on the desk on my lunch break.

    Very bad question. :D

I took: secondary ... but this is not really correct. :)

For gaming and photo developing I use mostly my M15x ... but for Internet, e-Mail, light gaming the M11x is simply perfect for me ... so from total usage a think I use the M11x 70% and the M15x 30% ... :D

It's the one upgrade you can make to any machine today that will give you the
highest performance impact. Period. If you're considering a RAM upgrade - do the SSD first. Yes - the SSDs are expensive - but worth it IMHO.

Well IMHO a $500-600 storage drive in an $800 laptop is a hard pill to swallow. Considering this is an Alienware chances are one of your primary reasons for it gaming, and only thing it will help there is with game load times.

Where is it $500-$600? I guess depending on your size requirements, etc. However, you can easily get 128GB drives now for < $300. Then buy a USB external drive enclosure for around $20, image the original drive that came with your laptop for backup purposes, and re-format/put that drive into the enclosure for your extra space needs, etc.

And it's not *just* for games in my situation (again primary laptop) - SSD makes a huge difference for my needs. YMMV.

    :)

At the moment my MBP is my main computer. However, I'm in the process of setting up the M11x so that it'll become my primary computer.. then I'll be selling the MBP. I want a slightly smaller laptop running Linux as my main system. Also overlaps a bit with my netbooks, so I'm going to sell those too and just have one laptop. Easier than dealing with multiples.

Yup, SSD is the best thing you can do to any laptop.
Just put an 80GB Intel into my old netbook just to see how much of an impact it really made and wow, can't believe I went this long without one. Everything loads in a fraction of the time as before, computer feels much faster overall when multitasking, and it's extremely quiet, no HDD clicking or heat build up.

Plan to buy a 160GB Intel for the M11x next month. I've been spoiled.

To answer the OP, the M11x will be my primary.
Netbooks have always been my main computers, this is a nice step up.

Originally I was in the market for a netbook, but after being disappointing with everything out there the m11x seemed best bang for the buck. I have currently replaced my asus g50 with the m11x and am very happy. I have a decent rig at home and at the office and I needed something in between both with good battery life and the ability to handle light photoshop/video editing and light gaming here and there.

Legally they can't void the warranty if you open it up to replace certain parts, such as hard drives and ram. (and battery in this laptops case) It's also pretty easy to do. Remove the back panel, remove two screws holding the hard drive, slide the hard drive to unseat it and then remove it. Then unscrew the hard drive from the carriage, screw the new hard drive in and then reverse the procedure.

Primary laptop, actually first one I've bought. Got in at the right time technologically for once. I was in the need for a netbook for school and would last battery wise for about 6 hours. Then they added very good gaming on this as a bonus. And for a price that is unmatchable. Kinda bummer that they don't include the mousepad or hat, and the instruction manual is not bound in leather. But, I would have never purchased 15" or higher anyways. So, this may be the poor man's AW but it sure kicks !

This will be my secondary laptop when traveling and at work to keep my manuals and inventory on and also to surf the web while i have lunch at Mcdonlalds due to having my internet with ATT.

Also just the right size to use in bed or at the kitchen table or to surf the web while my wife watches a dvd art film dubbed in another language.

    No.
I used a Dell Precision M4300 before the M11x, and nothing about the laptop's size really disturbed me (Typing a couple 3 page documents right now.) If anything it's a bonus for me since the laptop is lighter, gets far better battery life, and is far more portable than my 15" ever was.

Huh. Not what i was expecting at all. Im pleasantly surprised! :D Thanks for the info. Since it'd be my school laptop, when I'm at school, id be typing on it non-stop, would i get cramped on the keyboard? At home id hook it up to keyboard, monitor, etc etc,.

It wasn't my M11x, but I did get to mess with one today. The keyboard is very good for it's size, the back lighting is perfect, and has a nice rubbery finish. With that said, it's nothing compared to a nice full size keyboard. I'd definitely call it cramped, but I also haven't had much time to get used to it. While much better than an hp mini, it wasn't quite as good as I had expected.

Edit: another thing to consider is that my preference is tapered keys, but if you like keys that are flatter, or chiclet style this may feel better to you than it did to me.

The keyboard on the M11x is very good. I still think the best keyboard on a laptop this size was the Dell XPS M1210. I have used 14+" laptops in the past and will never go back to one. The reason I buy a laptop is to be portable. I will only buy laptops 11-13" (had a 10" netbook at one point and the screen was to small for me).

I looked at some M1210 pictures and the keyboard seems to have the same tapered keys my M1530 had (I loved that keyboard). I just wish they could make those backlit and stick them in the M11x. :p

    I'm in a bind.

Currently I have an Asus G73JH-X2 which has been nothing but amazing. However the only game I really play on it is MW2, which my soon to be shipped M11x can handle well too. Aside from that I use the laptop for school and multimedia, and output to my 1080p TV for watching movies. The problem is, the Asus isn't very mobile and its kind of a pain to pack it up every time I'm going to the library. I'm thinking about selling the Asus in the marketplace and using the M11x primarily.

Would I regret this decision? PS. The money from the Asus would eventually go towards a desktop.

The keyboard on the XPS m1210 and m11x are about the same size but the keys on the m11x are flat. The XPS m1210 keys are like a desktop keyboard. Also I loved the layout of everything on the XPS m1210. To this day I think it was a perfect besides it being very bulky for a 12.1 laptop(5lbs). I will have to say that this m11x comes as close to the XPS m1210 as you can get. So I will say I have no issue with the keyboard on the m11x and to me think its a perfect size (and I'm 6'2 with big hands).

If you think the M11x will hold you over for a couple years, then definitely. You can get one hell of a desktop rig for $1500. I am at a crossroads as well. My Sager is a great machine, but for what I do, the M11x should suffice, and have a gaming desktop as well. I'm considering the same thing.

Only issue is in six to nine months if a new game comes out that you really like then you may not be able to play it on the M11x if it can't handle it.

The keys on the M11x have a slight bow to them in the middle.

Haha, we're all in the same bind! I'm planning on building a desktop, then buying the m11x, as the laptop i have currently can hold me over till the desktops built, then buy the m11x.

And if its that case on the keyboard/ form factor, then ill have no doubts about upgrading when the time comes. :) Thanks Wingnut and Scupking!

For me, researching the m11x, I find it very hard, because there is not any shops where you can try them out(in my country at least).

The compact and keyboard and the display are the main things. I really wonder if it would be possible to do real work(serious work) on a laptop of this size. Photoshop, video editing in an 11''? Can it be done?

can you play MMORPGs, with many buttons and hotbars, when everything is so small? I guess it depends on the pixel density in the display(like how the new Iphone4 has that improved IPS display)!

That's why I am really interested in this thread. I really do wonder if this little marvel of a machine can be used as a desktop replacement efficently, with no compromises.

Of course if I got one, I would plug it in a larger monitor at home, but it's pretty relevant that it would be up to snuff on the go!

The M11x is now my primary notebook as my 10 year old Portege just doesn't have the go it once did.

I have a desktop Dell Dimension 4600 with 3.2GHz, which I've upgraded memory, PSU and GPU (ATI HD 3850 AGP)

All systems are dynamically connected to two Dell U2410 monitors via an array of cables, with USB switch for wireless keyboard and mouse.

It's all just plug and play.

My one netbook/notebook requirement is it must be less the 12" wide.
Have a reasonable CPU and GPU.

OK three requirements. After that the purchase is just made on functionality.
