I'm thinking about buying the i7 M11xr2 from Dell. I had a two-year old XPS m1330 before that died (twice!) from hard drive failure. As such, I'm a little worried about a repeat experience. But Dell's extended warranty is pretty pricey (the three year "basic" plan is $200).

Judging from your own experiences with the M11Xr2, should I buy the extended warranty?

There are a few threads asking this exact question already. A search will answer your question.

Depends on how long you want to keep the laptop for, and hwo much you are going to OC the components.

If you are going to keep it for 2 years at the most, i wouldn't bother getting one.

With my past experience with dell laptops YES get the warranty!!!

At work we have a couple laptops for when people travel and what not, and then I have one that I keep with me basically at all times.

So 3 machines over 2 years....1 lcd replacement, 2 wifi cards, 1 bluetooth card, 1 motherboard replacement, 2 dvd drive replacements, 3 keyboard replacements

I think there was more but those are the ones off the top of my head. Put it this way...i ordered the 3 year advanced.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS buy a good warranty for ANY laptop you buy, from ANY manufacturer. The warranty is more important than anything else... more important than a faster CPU, more important than more RAM, more important than a faster/larger hard drive.

The failure rate of laptops in the field is 42%. Any repairs or parts that you will need for your laptop on just one failure is likely going to cost more than the price of the warranty. And there is always the chance that you will have multiple failures that will require service.

Spend the money, and get the 2,3,or 4 year plan (however long you plan on keeping the laptop). I usually keep my machines for 3 years, then replace them. I highly recommend the Advanced Service Plan, because it covers accidental damage as well as manufacturing defect. You could literally drop your laptop from a 10-story building, and the Advanced Service Plan will cover the damages. The warranty is ALWAYS worth buying.

I am another believer in always buying a warranty (one that covers accidents), I went with the 1 year Advanced warranty, it is all I could afford, may upgrade by a year, who knows.

OK, I guess I'm going to get a warranty then. The question is -- which one? Should I use a service like Squaretrade? Does anyone have any experience with them? Also, I live overseas, so will their warranty be able to help me there? (I know Dell can)

I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm a newbie at this so please forgive me. Thanks for all your advice so far.

    Get one from Dell.

When Dell runs out of stock parts w/ older models, your system will get replaced with a newer system.

Where did you get that 42% rate from? According to squaretrade's research the rate is 31%. (of which 10% is from accidents).
