Can someone please tell me what Intel SpeedStep is and whether it will increase performance for CPU intensive games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and most other games?

If you disable overclock it will control cpu speed based on usage. For eg, when you are just sitting in word, it will be 900mhz, and when you are gaming it will be 1300.

When overclock is enabled, clock is locked on 1600 and won't be changed.

So intel speedstep is a technology to control cpu speed to adjust performance and power consumption.

So is it worth it to disable OverClock and turn on SpeedStep instead?

On speedstep you will have maximum 1300mhz. With overclock 1600. Its up to you...

I didnt notice much (any actually) diff in batt life by not being OC'd so in that sense if your system can OC and be stable it will probably stay that way - and you will not care.
