How much Ram do you have?

How much Ram is in your m11x? Do you want more?

 

I have 4, but i'm considering 8. Not sure how ,much of an improvement i'll see though.

4 gigs does what I need it to do.

 

Ya 4GB is perfect.

Combined with a SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 Extended 60gb) and an i7 processor, smoking fast for the size.

4gb EASILY handles Starcraft 2..so no need for 8gb.

 

Use VMware on mine so I need the 8 gigs.

Originally my i7 m11x came with 4gb, but I recently upgraded to 8GB of G.Skill DDRAM which I purchased from New Egg.

For my school tasks, 4GBs was enough, but since I am planning on doing some heavy simulation work as well as running VMs I figured I might as well opt in for 8GB since it wasn't that expensive. I don't regret my choice but I can't say its an overwhelming jump in performance.

 

Can the ULV processors handle VM ??

 

Yep, CPU-Z verified the CPU virtualilzation support as well.

 

I have 2. Got is a gift I use mine mainly for web surfing and light gaming.
Play blood bowl and thinking of getting Magic the Gathering Plainwalkers. If these are the kind of games I play is there any reason to upgrage to 4. Prices I see are around 90 dollors since GF I paid 638 for whole system seems like alot.

 

4 gb is all that is needed on a machine with this processing power Its not like people will be rendering 1hour HD video edits or recording multi track using bunches of software synths where the RAM would. Those programs are written to access all the RAM available. Most of what people do with this laspy doesn't need more than 4 GB. Unless one runs games while browsing the Internet and phot editing at the same time......

 

Toss up a Newegg link to the memory you got? How is the upgrade performing vs the original?

 

If you have 2 and only use it for lite gaming and surfing web will 4 make that much of a difference

 

My 8GB was free, otherwise I'd still be at 4GB.

 

I bought the i7 bundle on Dell Malaysia site so it comes of 8 GB........saves a lot of money rather than customize the ones from i5.....teehee
Now they'd removed the i7 bundle and i think i'm the lucky one lol!

That's the memory I got. Didn't have any problems with installation, motherboard and Windows 7 recognized the memory right away and booted to the OS. My windows scores didn't rise up a whole lot and as a whole the laptop isn't seemingly faster, but I know that when times are tough (Memory Wise) there's enough to go around for everyone(Sc2 has a tendency to eat 1.5 - 2 GB alone).

Thanks. Good to know that both kits should perform equally. I don't know if my OC is bumping up my tRFC, but I doubt it.

 

It is pretty interesting that the clock timings listed on the website are awfully different from the ones shown here, i believe they were 9-9-9-21.

Also wondering why my DRAM frequency is 50Mhz lower than yours...

 

Four Gigs and I'm content, if my M11X doesn't break in the next couple of years I'd probably add in more Ram to bring it up to 8 simply to extend the life some more.

The RAM is rated at those timings at default speed, but since Alienware underclocks the RAM to 800 Mhz, the memory sticks will honor the SPD timings at that frequency............this is a good thing as lower or tighter timings increases performance (but bad in the sense that Alienware underclocks the RAM) .

I have my CPU overclocked to 150Mhz from the default of 133Mhz, so the RAM gets 'overclocked' as well, which is why mine is higher than yours.

 

4 gigs. The average user won't need more than that but hey it does support up to 8.

 

I have 4GB, personally, I would never go under 4GB, but consider going up to 8GB.

 

Why everyone says 4 or 8? I'm pretty sure that if you think about upgrading from 4 GB it's better to use 6 for start to see if there is any improvement. Cause If you won't see much of better speed having 6 GB RAM you won't spend money for useless additional 2 GB.
I have 6 GB. And THE ONLY reason to have more is to delete or minimize Pagefile.sys file. It will barely increase speed computer will use HDD less.

 

I don't use a page file with 4gb of ram and haven't had trouble, so I don't think that's an argument for >4gb (at least in my experience).

8 is too much mulah when stacked with the SSD. (For now)

 

Because having more than 4 is pretty much useless. Unless you're doing heavy stuff, perhaps VM or emulating or something, then it's pointless.

On my MSI Wind U230 there was. It wouldn't do dual channel because of the mismatch.

8 for me. I tend to do heavy multi-tasking when gaming (sometimes I'm using two computers at the same time even) and I have never had too much RAM ... I am also using the gskil 10666 RAM posted earlier in the thread. Its great. (my first batch was DOA but 2nd batch is performing perfectly)

You can to use no swap file if you have 2 gB just serfing net and watching nonHD video. And also if You have 1 GB RAM without turning it on at all
6 GB and more IS GOOD If you have very fast RAM like 1333Mh'z. Othervise on DDR2 it just won't use all memory with slow clocks like 633 Mh'z

I ment that between 2 choises (4 or 8) there is third in the middle - 6!
I was shocked that there are only 3 persons who have 6 Gigabytes of Random Access Memory meanwile 17 have 8 GB

 

i don't think 6 GB runs in dual channel mode which is why there is more people with 4 GB or 8 GB. even though i am considering 6 lol

 

The loss of dual channel mode makes it very much worth skipping 6GB and going with 8GB.

 

Dual channel gives only 15% more speed NOT TWICE faster. So using DDR3 1333 Mh'z can not just handle 6 GB like 4 but it will be much better using more memory (6 instead 4). Got It?

WRONG! I have the same speed on 4 Gigs of RAM as every one who has 4 or 8. And ONLY on last 2 gigs of the 4-Gigs Ram the speed is twice slower. It is called DUAL Asynchronised (or nonsync...) channel mode.
So if you still don't understand, If you will buy 2 Gigs more (1x4GB and 1x2GB instead 2x2GB) only the additional 2GB of Ram will be slower and my system will notice that only after it takes more than 4 GB of RAM.
When I said 15 % slower It means average speed of FULLY using RAM

Example. Additional 2 GB are 33% of full amount of it (of 6GB). Understand? And 2 GB will be twice slower than Dual mode so it's utility/value/quality will be...
33.33% / 2 = 16,66%.
All this means that comparing utility of 6Gb of "6GB-Complectation RAM" in computer and 6 GB of "8GB-Complectation RAM" using games and applications which needs 6 GB of RAM I would loose 16,66% of speed.
And I DO NOT LOOSE ANYTHING against 4 GB complectation.

All this may seems complicated but it's not.
In many moments size is important but tere are moments when speed is not

4G is the most I've ever had in a computer. Not sure what I'm missing by not having more... it might be best that way. <wink>

 

Even on this forum you can find something about types of Dual channel mode

there is no "soviet russia" du..mass. Or russia either soviet union. Also someone can say that 2 words in one senance like "former soviet country russia"
And I'm not from there.
