With a netbook you always carry that risk of it getting stolen. I feel that spending 100 dollars for three years protection seems to be a fair deal for that extra confidence. I have to leave my backpack in a cubby during my internship, and just in case it gets swiped, I'd like that protection.

How does it work? Like, will the police only see it if its connected to the internet? Because they won't be able to log on...

Anyone else know anything or have any experience with lojack?

It's software (LoJack in name only; licensed from the real LoJack guys). Without some kind of BIOS support, it would be way too easy to wipe along with the HDD, which most thieves would already do so that it wouldn't be traced back to you.

i think the premise is that given full bios protection, (rewrites itself onto the hdd), even if it is formatted upon loss or theft of the laptop it allows the people at lojack to datamine the pc if it connects to the web, Ip adresses, bank accounts etc. its all passed onto the police and they go knock on the door.

    however..

i really wanted to utilise this feature before i bought it, so i asked a dell rep about it ....
i was told by a dell rep that though it is in the bios, Lojack is not supported on the m11x.. which tbh sucks..

then again i guess you can never know if they know what they are talking about half the time

Prey is free and very similar. But AFAIK yes the thief would need to login and on to the internet before they would work. The recommendation is to setup a guest account with easy access as sort of a honeypot if running one of these. That way the thief has easy access to an account that is not your main.
