Heres a good guide I found in a quick Google search:

How To Use an Xbox 360 Controller on your PC

And heres a BC2 specific guide:

Just so you know, you're going to have a hard time enjoying using a controller in a mouse/keyboard world. You're most likely not going to have the reaction time or speed and it won't be a pleasant experience. That being said, please share your results as I'd be interested to see what you think!

I use my Xbox wireless controller (purchased from Best Buy for $22) regularly without a problem. Just plug and play, Windows will autodetect and install all necessary drivers. Works great for Street Fighter IV. Wished it would work with Fable: The Lost Chapters. I've read that some have gotten it to work, something with mapping and profiles but I don't quite get it. If you go this route, make sure you get an Xbox Wireless Receiver ($33 at Amazon).

I agree with everything in your post, except the "autodetect and install all necessary drivers". I had to manually download and install drivers for my Wireless Xbox 360 controller on my Windows 7 system. Maybe my system was somehow screwed up from somethign I've installed in the past, or maybe your system already had Xbox controller drivers on them that you had already forgotten.

In either case, once the drivers are installed (automatically or manually), the controller works flawlessly.
