My m11x r1 should be arriving within 2 days (very excited). I plan to overclock my cpu and gpu as far as it can go and be stable. Im sure my temperatures will benefit from this upgrade(AS5). if any of the super smart and generous kind people feom these forums could help me and point in the right direction as far as application of the product and dissassembly of the m11x id be so grateful. Im not a complete noob i can easily upgrade ram and hdd and i even swit hed out desktop cpus and pci express cardz before. I just need general information. Thank you

You can kinda use my guide as reference and also use Dell's M11x service manual. Be warned...this process is nothing like desktop mods. You are in for a fight. Just be organized and you'll come out fine.

As for the TIM, I'd recommend something nonconductive like MX-4 or MX-3. a small drop at the center die will do. Something like a balled up grain of cooked rice will do. Since the CPU and gpu are small, you dont need much Paste.

All I can say is, BE VERY CAREFUL doing this with the 11x. As villosa mentioned, its not a desktop and personally, I'd just leave it be. The 15x or 17x, ok thats a different story. The way this one is setup/laid out - well, I left my 11xR1 alone. No problems with temps and the factory thermal goop.

Let us know how it works out.

So the TIM has to go on the actuall cpu and gpu?? i though u applied it to the heatsink.... Oh well i oredered my m11x with 2 gigs of ram cus i felt dell was overcharging so i have to open it anywayz to put 2 x 4 gigs in there. If it looks too daunting ill jus let it be. Thanks guys

There's no point in doing it because temperature will not factor into the stability of your OC anyway. Nevermind the fact you'll void your warranty for almost no benefit.

    aggreed...

ive taken so many laptops apart its not even funny, every modle is totally different and a pita to get to the heatsinks.

its nothing like a desktop at all. the buletooth, wifi, ram and hdd are easy to get to and may take you 5min max to swap out. but just to get the mobo out may take you a hour or more depending on your skill level.

unless you have crazy temps and dont want to return your laptop i would just leave it be. its not worth the time or voiding your waranty unless your like me and you just do the stuff for kicks.

you're getting an r1? you'll have exactly one option for overclocking the cpu in bios and it's not really worth it to replace the TIM for a 300MHz OC that doesn't really affect temps. your only other option is to attempt the pin mod. not sure about GPU overclocking, though.

What is the point of applying Arctic Silver to a laptop?

You get lower temps, but so what? What actual practical benefit do you get, beyond the personal satisfaction of watching some number in a temperature reporting application drop by 2C?

the factory crap they install was horrible and will take forever to clean. they put WAYYYY too much and it gets all over the place. after applying arctic silver 5 to my R2 idle temps dropped by about 2-3C.

My R2 idle temps dropped by about 5C using a $10 aftermarket cooler (10-12C at full load). In fact, you'll get a more effective drop in temperatures if you just sit the back of the laptop on top of a coaster than with newly applied TIM. As good as AS5 is, it isn't worth voiding your warranty for.
