After a long and painstaking ordeal in which my m11x r1 has gone through many trials and tribulations at the hands of Dell technicians, my request for a replacement has finally been granted and I will be receiving an m11x r3 i5 in the near future.

    The excitement is unbelievable :D

Just wondering what sort of performance gains I'll see in switching up? My specific wonder is how it will handle Batman Arkham Asylum (and its sequel, which I am only assuming runs similarly as we don't have it yet). The cpu wasn't strong enough for my liking on the r1 and I would get annoying lags in heavier action.

From what I've already read, battery life is about the same as the r1 but I'll be interested to test it myself.

Biggest boost for exam study

On top of small differences the biggest one is the change of CPU.

    R1: Core 2 Duo + 335m w/Manual Switchable graphics.

    R2: First gen iCore (i5 and i7) + 335m w/Optimus

    R3: Second gen iCore (Sandy bridge i5s and i7s) + 540m w/Optimus

Other major changes include the change of ports on the board as well as the different LCDs that came on them. Pretty minor differences other than the core and card changes.

Would you have issues with the pinmod? And yeah, Dell techs stuffed my laptop up big time on multiple occasions before they finally decided to replace it. Has been a torturous couple of months. Don't like hand writing notes :/

Surfed around a bit, can't wait to get this thing, looks like a decent overall performance jump. Had an SSD all lined up to put into the old one when things went wrong, so think I'll whack that straight in and be blown away :D

well, i have 2 R1 motherboards, 1 stock, and 1 modded. i got the one in my m11x right now off of ebay, and the replacement one i got has been sitting around. if my hinges decide to fail, im going to request a replacement, i would just put in the stock mobo.
and it is a good performance boost cpu wise, gpu, not so much.
oh and the tech that replaced my keyboard stripped one of the holes in my m11x case, so i had to fit a 1 size bigger screw in, that was a total pain.

Ahhh, makes sense! I think you'll have difficulty getting them to replace the whole unit if your hinge fails. To give you a run down on the nightmare I've gone through:

    1. Put laptop in to get faulty hinge replaced with new design (had already had it replaced once a few months before hand).

    2. Received laptop back, hadn't been reassembled correctly so there was a massive crack along the hinge back (see attached picture). I couldn't just take it back into the shop, I HAD to lodge another service request by phone to take it in and get it repaired the next day.

    3. Got it back, hinge all good now. Took it home, discovered the alienFX no longer worked. Had to lodge another service request, this time I was told I would receive a replacement as two consecutive repairs had been botched.

    4. Got a phone call a week later saying my request for a replacement had been denied, and they would instead send a technician out to replace the keyboard. When I received the call, I was in the middle of a day long public transport trip after a packed weekend of travelling and socialising, so I was in no mood to fight. Technician was sent, keyboard was replaced, all good!

    5. Decided to upgrade to a SSD a couple of months later, went to open it up, found that when they reassembled the laptop while fixing their botched hinge fix, they had stripped a base screw to the point where I couldn't possibly get it out. Had to send it off to the the workshop in the nearest capital city (four hours away) and didn't have it for a week across the last week of my uni lectures.

    6. Received it back, fired it up, whacked solid state drive in, discovered that the space bar, g, h, comma, f4, f5, f6 and up arrow keys didn't work and there was a visible bow with the keyboard. I ended up not having a usable laptop across my study and exam period.

In short, I was once impressed with their warranty and technical repair service, now... not so much. Happy that I'm getting a r3 out of it though.

But, by all means, fight for a replacement, and tell us of your conquests :D
