Ok so i want to watch some movies over HDMI on my big bad TV, all it does is clone thesame output as i got.

I want it to shut off the internal laptop one so i could close my laptop down, but now what it does is as i said just clone it and if i close the m11x it glitches out and stops using HDMI.

It is a pain in the , from what i understand HDMI output is only from Nvidia card, but why do i have to keep the laptop open... it is just stupid as the movie plays on both displays then...

is there some HDMI settings panel tucked away somewhere? i think i saw an option something within the lines of "play on... ->" and i could select the connected display or something? i am sort of baffled by how hard it is to get HDMI to do what i want when the whole thing is supposed to be simple and seamless...

    So yeah, annoyed.

Under "display" in the nvidia control panel, you should have two boxes, check the one for your tv/monitor and uncheck the laptop one. And finally make certain in your power settings that closing the lid does nothing.

Closing LID does nothing... it is just when im in HDMI, once i close lid HDMI turns off and the screen gets all seizure-y for a moment then goes back to normal. From nvidia panel from what i understand it says that my samsung TV uses Nvidia card and laptop display uses intel integrated, which is no surprise, but why does it glitch the crap out when i close it...? and i can't uncheck any of the two boxes...

on windows display i found that windows key+p allows to connect projector, which seem to work best... allows me to close the lid without glitching out too! but once i open it - it turns HDMI off right away resuming to my laptop screen. If i do duplicate, it doesn't work at all just resets my laptop screen to 800x600 for no reason. extend shows wallpaper on my lappy and desktop on TV.

Isn't there a way to make the duplicate without having to switch between displays all the time with windowskey+P ?

If i do it using nvidia panel it either does extend or duplicate, both of which glitch and turn off HDMI when i close the lid so theres no way to turn off laptop's display...

This doesn't happen to me, but in my settings I have it using the nvidia card all the time and not use the intel one. Try that and see what happens

Try this (I have been doing this since the last year in order to use my TV as my monitor having the m11x closed while doing it [I use an HDMI cable]) :
Windows key+P, then choose duplicate. Now go to the Alienware Command Center, then go to AlienFusion and choose any profile (To do this, I choosed the High Performance one) . Then go to QuickSettings>Lid Close Action>Do nothing.
    That's it. Good luck ;)

Same thing happens with me, when i close the lid the TV siezes for a second then goes back to normal. I'm not too bothered though, once i close the lid i keep it that way so i just make sure i close it before i start watching anything.

Picked up a mini wireless keyboard with trackpad which i'm using to control my M11x while the lid's closed, it's pretty damn handy.

Yeah, when i do windowskey+P it works when i close it but once i open it, it switches to laptop LCD and turns off tv, playback gets a seizure though...

It is using nvidia card, just that by what nvidia panel displays - internal card is only used by the laptops LCD, and TV uses nvidia one.

I am just baffled by how user unfriendly it is lol... well i got the general idea, hopefully they will fix it with the drivers later on or something - just give more options and don't turn hdmi off when i close/open lid...

why are you cloning? Use projector mode and turn off the built in screen (if R3 allows). This way you arent clicking through menus etc.

Failing that, you might be able to get this the way you want while in extended mode.

The issue here might be how the display works on optimus systems... are not all the display functions handled by intel?

basically what i am using is projector mode in windows, cause it causes least problems, i can still close the laptop, as leaving it open next to the tv is a nuisance. However opening it disables HDMI and turns it back to m11x display. Anyways it is least bad scenario...

If i use clone or extend i can't close it and display doesn't turn off after 5minutes as i has set it to. If i close it in that kind of setting it just glitches out and disables HDMI, doesn't work very well at all if i want to turn off laptop's LCD.

So yeah, not perfect. From what i understand HDMI can only use nvidia card, at least for what i understand from Optimus diagram drawing things. When i use HDMI TV runs on nvidia and laptop's screen runs on integrated graphics, no idea why it works like that at all... seems wasteful.

Anyways, at least i got this sort of figured out.

Does the R3 not use Fn F1 to toggle between LCD, LCD + HDMI and HDMI? This is the way I do it on my R1. :)

the problem remaining is closing/opening laptop's lid without glitching everything and turning off the HDMI... Everything else seem to be okay-ish

Have you tried a different TV just to see what happens? Or another type of connection like the display port? Switch around some of the variables to see if its the TV or the Laptop, or even just the HDMI.
