What is your M11x connecting to?

HDTV or receiver? ... or something else?

Always check you have the latest ALC665 drivers from Dell

Using my ONKYO receiver I have to select multi-channel(on the receiver) to support the 3x3.5mm->RCA output from the M11x and thus get 5.1 surround(6 Channels).
If I don't select Multi-channel on the receiver I just get stereo (2 channel).

My SR575 ONKYO only has HDMI passthru and thus doesn't split audio/video at the receiver such that both audio and video are passed directly to the LCDTV. I can only support digital audio via optical or coax digital connections at the receiver.

When I look at my HDMI connect to my HDTV I only see two channels, which I'd say is probably correct as the HDTV only has left/right speakers.

Besides, when I connected my HDTV, Microsoft discovered the SONY TV driver and probably only supports two channels.

The easy test is find someone with a receiver which supports both audio/video channels via HDMI using a 5.1 Dolby sound track.

Then you can just do a sound test on each of the speakers from the M11x to verify the correct speaker layout and thus 6 channels.

I have it connected to a receiver that supports the 5.1 and I get the multichannel surround via the HDMI.

    I'm connecting to a HDTV.

I have a Yamaha receiver that doesn't have HDMI.
I want to connect the m11x to the HTDV and connect the optical output from the HDTV to the optical input on the receiver.

I thought that way I could passthru the multichannel stream from to the receiver through the TV.

But it makes sense that the HDMI detects only 2 channels when is connected to the tv.

    thanks!

You may want to check the HDTV and see if there is a setting to 'passthru' the audio to the digital output port.
My HDTV has surround output settings in the menu, but it's a bit hopeful given I only have RCA auidio out and another A/V RCA out.

Guessing even if you got the audio passthru on the HDTV, the driver would still say two channels as it's the HDTV muxing the audio and not the HDMI which still passes the same audio that the driver on the HDMI M11x end specifies.

You could always take the messy solution like me and just run the three 3.5mm cables from the M11x directly to the receiver. Then plug the 'RCA' ends into your analogue input on the receiver. This gives you 5.1 surround(Multi-Channel).

OR buy a new 3D ready 7.2 channel receiver.. with HDMI 1.4 :D

Bullets pinging of helmets on the surround/back speakers is always a bonus.
