When your new R2 arrives you can swap drives without any worries. Be sure to test everything out before you send back your broken R2 though. It's very likely that the "new" replacement R2 will be a refurb.

By the way, how did you convince Dell to send you a new notebook after the hinges broke? Typically they go out of their way to replace the failed part rather than an outright replacement of the whole enchilada.

It is not worth the trouble of swapping hinges, especially since there is no guarantee that your new hinges will last. You're better off just swapping drives like you had originally mentioned, and just be done with it.

And just because an item is refurb, doesn't mean that it is somehow inferior to a brand-new unit. When it comes to electronics, I would actually prefer a refurb unit, because someone has actually used the unit in the field and has found out which part(s) are defective, and which part(s) lasted.

Remember that if you decide to do a fresh install instead of just swapping it that you will have to be careful to not delete your system recovery partition if you wish to keep it.
Personally, I would ask for them to send a tech to my house. Everything I seem to hear about the in home service for hinges is that it is either fast and amazing or that they send a tech not authorized or without the hinge. I'd be willing to take that gamble to not go without my m11x... If dell will send you your replacement before you send back the defective model though, then I would just take the replacement
