Sorry but I spent $25 on the M11x Green Onions Anti-Glare screen and it is a piece of junk. I cleaned the screen really well, washed my hands, and was very careful to install the screen. Well even the slightest microscopic amount of dust and it leaves a bubble on the screen. So then you have to peel it back and try to use a piece of tape to remove tht piece of dust. In the meantime you've just let two more pieces of microscopic dust settle on it, before you know it you've got about a dozen tiny bubbles that looks like water stains on the screen. It does it's job as anti-glare but you feel like you're looking at a water stained window after it just rained and dried. Horrible.

I'll see if Green Onions is worth anything if they will replace my screen protector to give it another go. Right now two enthusiastic thumbs down, I'd do more if I had more thumbs.

The panasonic's that I am used to have touchscreens
There is a scratch sheet ,similar to the anti glare sheet that you are installing
We have found that the best installation is
Do the change in the bathroom
Run the shower for a while to fog the room
That eliminates dust in the air
I still hate dealing with the bubbles

Thanks for that. If they send me a replacement I'll try that. Otherwise this one is more or less shot, unless I spend an hour trying to use tape to take off the dust particles. Plus the corners don't stick because of me handling them with my hands. I guess I'll have to use latex or rubber gloves next time too. Why oh why can't Alienware just offer an anti-glare screen? I mean even if they charge an extra $25, they clearly would have business because they sell this protector.

I would gladly pay someone to change it
    Hate that job

Any comments on the Kai brand Anti-Glare Screen Protector
What is the consensus on the best one for the M11x ?

I always apply screen protectors by soaking them in water with mild soap, then putting them on the screen (the soap neutralizes the effects of the adhesive so you can move the protector around and not worry about getting a perfect alignment the first time). Applying it in a steamy room will help with dust particles because of the aerosolized water - this is REALLY good advice actually.

It looks wonky for a day or two (lots of bubbles etc), but they ALL disappear eventually, as the water slowly evaporates from beneath, and the adhesive begins to do its thing.

yes these things almost need installed by a robot in a sterile lab to get a good install.
same situation for my cell phones...the zaggs are even worse..
I had the same exact thing happen...
1 little spot that looked like a water stain.. tried to fix it and it was game over...
considering i just went through this same thing with a zagg on my hd2 i was livid...

Yeah I'd pay someone $25 to put it on if they could do it more or less perfect. If you use the mild soap in water, wouldn't that counter the adhesive more or less permanently though?

At this point I guess I don't have anything to lose because it's not really useable as it is.

To be honest, I do like the anti-glare feature as it seems to work decently. So I guess if I can get it to work I'll be happy. I'm thinking I'll need another one though. Anyone have luck getting a replacement?

Wow guys. I decided to give it a try. Hadn't taken a shower yet today (ewww) so kept the water running with the door closed. Filled up a large tupperware with water and a couple drops of dish soap and doused the protector in it for a minute. Then I applied it and smoothed the protector from the center outboard in all directions and so far it looks good.

I think I will still call green onions though and see if they can get me a replacement. I'd rather do that from the start with a new one because tehre's a couple kinks and spots where it doesn't stick at the edges from removing and reapplying several times.

    +1.

I used a zagg on my cell phone, it was a pain too, but it's small enough that I could slowly install it using a credit card to push it along, and a lot less likely to be misaligned. But I'll be sure to use this technique from now on.

Update. After it's been sitting for a bit, now there's tons of small bubbles everywhere. Doesn't seem like it's working. It's worse than ever before. gah! It looks like it has chicken pox. I think I'll have to remove it altogether. Not sure where I can store it though.

No leave it. The bubbles will disappear. On my Samsung Galaxy it took 2 days for most of the bubbles to go away, a few were still there and I thought (damn, oh well), but then a few days after that, those went as well, and they were right in the centre. Just leave it for a few days.

It's the same procedure the window tint guy used on my windows
After a couple days the small bubbles were gone
You just have to get the main ones ,going from the center outwards with a credit card etc

Ok will let it sit over the weekend at least.

    edit: Credit card works great.

Except now even if Green Onions doesn't replace it then I will probably order another one now that I see how it can be done, and it looks great. It's pulling away from the corners and edges now. Maybe the soap took away its adhesive properties enough that it won't stick at the edges. I dunno. I'll let it sit for a few days and see how it turns out.

I have a KAI clear protector on mine, tried the anti glare one before found it a bit grainy. Its more like a sticky sheet of plastic, same dust in the air issues. No bubbles though.

Uh.. if you've ever put on an invisible shield from Zagg you'll know how to put a Green Onion on. Please don't say how their product is bad when it's clearly user error.

I've been using mine since July and it's fine.

Ok, I admit that my subject of this thread is a little too harsh. I was just overly frustrated at the time.

Now I have to say that the screen looks wonderful. The protector is just pinched in one spot not sure how it happened, so it creates a big buble in that spot. Otherwise everything looks great. If anything, I think the screen colors and overall appearance is better than without it.

I sent an email to Green Onions requesting a replacmement, we'll see if they respond in the next couple of days, otherwise I will reorder.

May thanks to TomCat57 and roxxor. Those two suggestions were spot on. I will do that with my new protector.

Well the soapy water really helped. You could slip it around on the surface to get it lined up the way you wanted it. I'd also recommend some latex gloves to prevent fingerprints/grease, along with installing it in the steamed up bathroom to eliminate/reduce any amount of dust. After a few hours I held the cover in place and used a credit card to push the bubbles to the edge. Let it sit another day, rubbed the bubbles to the edge with a credit card once more (harder then) and it's perfect. Well in my case except for the pinched part, not sure how it happened, and unfortunately it's on the screen so I can't ignore it.

Update. Green Onions shipped me a replacement. It's in retail packaging and everything. I actually ordered a replacement myself too before I knew they were gonna do this. So I guess I'll have a spare. When I get the nerve to do it again, I'll let you know how it turns out, the procedure, etc.

I can see it now though if you hired someone to install this for you, call them on the phone:

Customer: Hello I need a screen protetor on my laptop.
Installer: Ok, when would you like to do it?
Customer: Can you do it now?
Installer: Sure, just be sure to turn on a hot shower and shut the door to the bathroom before I get there.
    Customer: uh, ok?
Installer: Get a soapy bucket of water, oh yeah, and some latex gloves.
    Customer: /click/

Update. Finally got around to reinstalling the new one. Went well. Except it seems there's another crease on the protector. I know I didn't pinch it this time, I was extra careful. I thought it might be a piece of dust, but I pulled it back in my steamy bathroom with latex gloves on and took a piece of tape to that spot and couldn't pull anything off. It's well off to the right side, maybe an inch from the edge of the visible part of the screen, so I'm not going to worry about it. Just a bit disappointed.

I tell you what, the anti-reflective protector screen from viewguard is great! I have it on my G73JH and my wife is getting that laptop when my 8170 arrives and I move in to it. She told me DO NOT REMOVE MATTE FINISH. After all, she said get the 8170 ... she is moving from a Toshiba P25 with a matte finish and does not want to go back to the glossy finish that was on her HP DV9000 (that blowed up!). When I went from the glossy screen on the G73 to the matte protector, the glare was considerably reduced and the brightness, color and contrast were not affected that much. As to the viewing angles, I never view from angles so that is not a factor. I do all kinds of photo editing and CGI rendering and am very pleased with the screen. I also have the option if I want to go back to the glossy (crazy idea!) I can just peel it off and reuse it if I want. One must be very careful when installing tho, if there is a bubble or a piece of dust, one will see it. It took two tries and I got it right. For $32 or so, it was a nice investment. Protects the screen and also if I need to, I can touch the screen with no worries.
