I’m going backpacking to S/E Asia for 8 months. I need something with some grunt so I can do some basic video editing and gaming while I’m away. I’ll probably film in 720p rather than 1080p to make life a little easier on the m11x.

My main question is where should I get it from? On my last check in the UK the i7 version with 4GB of RAM is an insane £1108 or $1790!! The Equivalent version from the USA (Not inc any vouchers) is £689 or $1114. A very large difference! I have a cousin over there who could sort it out for me as well.

My first stops are India (Mumbai) and Singapore. Would it be cheaper to get it from there? Does anyone know anywhere decent for getting them abroad?

Cheers for any help. Comments on the video editing aspect would also be a great help :D

No, if you were to buy it in india, it would be a pain in the *** just trying to get it in the first place. You prob will not be able to customize so the specs may be below what you want, and if anything it would be even more expensive than you would get it in the UK. Best bet is to get your cousin (in america I assume) to buy it for you and ship it off, save like 500$.

I think your right. Had a look at the Dell Singapore website and its more expensive than the USA.

I'm off to China as well but need it before then.

Right USA it is then. Will have to look out for some decent deals.

How much video do you plan on shooting? What program are you going to use? Video codex is a beast on hard drives.
Bring a few portable drives if you are doing extensive video.
Get the best cpu/gpu configuration that you can because you will need it.
And plan on waiting a long time for rendering on small notebooks.

I'll be using a handheld video camera which shoots in 720p/1080i/1080p. It’s nothing professional just to send back to my family and for memories (although Mum and Dad are both professional editors for the BBC so no pressure :D). I’ll be using Pinnacle Studio 14. Since I won’t be using 5.1 sound I’m thinking of using the CUDA Based Badaboom for encoding as it will use the CUDA core’s of the GPU. Although I’ll compare the times and quality with Handbrake.

    I don’t mind paying up to £800GBP.

I will have a look into your suggestions thank you sk3tch.

I have a 1TB external drive at the moment (mini samsung) and will be fitting a 60GB OCZ Vertex SSD for the boot drive. I'll probably get another 1TB external drive.
