Most games do not require you have the DVD now a days. Especially if you purchase from Steam.

i heard about steam, but i'm not very familiar with it, do you buy the games and download them to your computer? what if i sell the laptop? do I loose all my games? do you have to be online to play the games you buy from them even for single player?

Steam is really the way to go,
Yes you download them directly to the hard drive, The games are easily erased from your computer and are saved to your steam account, and you can re-download games as many times as you want. You can sign into steam in offline mode and any games that are not online dependent, you can play.

P.s steam allows you to add games, even if you didn't buy it from them (aka if you have an activation code for the game you add it to your steam library)

yeah, if you're that new just google Steam gaming and it'll take you to the main site. It's a pretty huge community and they have some awesome stuff out there.

They regularly do discount weekends with games like half-life 2 going for $.02 cents! That's a little rare, but still they offer tons of games at very reasonable prices and always have deals!

You want to get to know Steam!

    You've got 2 choices....

    1. Buy a USB DVD-ROM drive
    2. Use a digital delivery service (AKA Steam)

and yes, there are free games on Steam. I would give "Alien Swarm" a try. Steam is basically like a game "App Store" ... you buy a game, it downloads/installs it to your PC, and you play it whenever you want. If you ever reinstall your PC, the games you bought are associated with your Steam account... so all you gotta do is re-log into Steam and re-download your games.

Furthermore, if your a cheapskate like me... Steam is your best friend. They have sales ALL the time... sometimes for 75% off. You can pick up retail games for fractions of what they charge at the store. It's free to install, and like I said there are some free games you can download (Alien Swarm, America's Army...) as well as free game demos you can try.
