For those who have 8GB of RAM, what's your WEI score for RAM?

    Hi,

I just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB RAM, but I noticed that my WEI score remains the same for the RAM. Is this normal?

My RAM WEI subscore is 5.7 before and after the upgrade. I just thought this score would increase.

Thanks for your kind feedback.

    Updated:
I must say, the whole system feels really zippy for me with the 8GBs. I can switch between all my apps with no noticable lag at all! Previously, I had some lag whenever I switched between the different Apps. I normally have these apps running at the same time; MySQL server, Coldfusion Server, CS5 Dreamweaver, CS 5 Fireworks, Cute FTP Pro, CS5 Photoshop, MySQL Benchtop, Navicat 8, Internet Download Manager, WinAmp, Notepad, and about 10 explorer tabs.

I've been thinking about upgrading to 6GB or 8GB. Worth it? Pretty pricey upgrade

4GB is more than enough for most people's needs and it's certainly enough for gaming. Windows 7's memory management is very good. The only reason I've got more is because it was essentially free.

It was worthwhile for me. I finally do not have any lag whateover when I switch between all my open apps. :D

I agree totally. Upgrading to 8Gb does not really affect gaming performance.

base on my experiment 4GB vs 8GB. There is indeed some slight improvement in the overall responsiveness of the system. Especially if you have SSD. my 4GB set up is on desktop while 8GB is my M11xR2. I do monitoring on the ram utilization and watch the way Windows using the cache. For machine with 8GB, you will have a lot more free RAM ready for your application use at anytime since after windows cache everything along with your running processes it would take up an avg of 3-4++GB on avg. which guarantee you at least about 3.5GB free for any application that needs load stuffs to RAM.

Main thing is it helps a ton especially on scenarios where you running multiple apps and do not have to worry about closing them to free up RAM for current app. this would minimize possible use of virtual RAM which is essentially slower than real physical RAMs

Ok a buch of explanations, they are right.

    I have 8gb I get 5.4 to confirm. Before (4gb) 5.4

m11x R1 here... It seems that those core i models take some sort of advantage over the ram.

4Gb is enough, I would not recommend less, so if you have 2Gb get 4 at least.

If you have two modules in then you will get better performance than one as it uses them in parallel (twice the bandwidth).

If both modules are the same size this gives this parallel use applies to all the RAM, if one is bigger than the other then the extra amount will not be running in parallel. (so 2Gb + 4Gb module, the first 4Gb runs parallel and the last 2Gb is not). Though you probably won't notice much difference. (for memory modes see Intel)

With extra RAM Windows can use more for various caching which is where I guess slight improvements come from. Also you could set up a RAM Disk to have temporary files stored there.

Also I have not looked into the integrated GPU but suspect it uses system RAM, which means you loose some system RAM to it. So 4Gb could be 3.75Gb? The Nvidia has it's one 1Gb.

I have 8GB and my WEI hasn't changed either (5.5). Reason I have 8GB is that I use VMware Workstation and trust me, it (actually the VMs) needs all the RAM I can give it. Most of my time on the laptop is spent inside a VM, yet other VMs are also running doing their tasks, so 8GB was a necessity for me.

<nostalgia>I remember back when I upgraded my 486 from 16 to 64 Mb of RAM (for 500$!!!!!). Everyone was like "OMG, you'll never need more than 32". Trust me, Windows and everything else was much faster! I remember holding each stick and saying "Wow, each stick is 16 MB!" ;) </nostalgia>

I think my system feels snappier having gone to 8gb.
First I put in the SSD and tried that, then I went from 2gb to 8gb and I certainly feel a difference there.

I am happy overall with the Ram and SSD my R1 feels fast to me.

some ppl thinks over kill for 8GB. but with 64bit OS when i do comparison to another system that run on 4GB. I too felt there is difference. so definitely its not over kill. does nto make game run faster is true but over all system is definitely more responsive.

You can get 6gb if you want, chipsets have been supporting L-shape/flex mode asymmetrical dual channel since 3-4 years now.

It is still better to have 8gb, but 6gb in L-shape is better than 4gb unless you benchmark.

Ok if you check Start, Right-Click Computer > Properties

    Mine says 4Gb, 3.80Gb useable

So I am suspecting the integrated GPU grabs 256Kb.
