Anyone got any thoughts of using the m11x all night for folding. Dangerous or not??

^ the battery? Why not leave it on the charger..I mean the OP said leaving it all night.

@OP: I dont think theres anything wrong with it, just set your screensaver and turn off display. For peace of mind, let a monitor program running in the background and check up on it in the morning for your temps. Post em here when you do.

But the battery is not removable, so even if it's running off the charger you're still affecting the lifespan of your battery. All for something which doesn't benefit you in the slightest?

I know folding is useful, but when it comes time to buy a replacement battery, YOU are paying for it, not them. They aren't going to cut the cost with you, even if you spent 1,000 hours folding.

The Battery charge issue can be tackled with an app called: BTMeter.exe see this post for more about the app.

Basically you can disable the battery charge when online with it.

I have around 80 works in my PS3, it takes like 7 hours to do it, I dunno how much in the PC or in this case, the m11x....

Im pretty sure batteries now a days are "smarter" when it comes to being on the A/C power. When reaching full charge, the battery knows when to stop charging and let the AC brick power the laptop, thus leaving the battery out of the equation.

Ive owned an R1 so I know the battery is not removable that easily (still removable), however the purpose of a battery is to hold a charge and dissipate said charge. The lifespan is how many cycles of charge and discharge it goes through.

The only way you can reduce the lifespan of it is by doing that. Leaving it on the AC doesnt harm the battery. Its a widely spread myth.

With that notion, all your "paying" (thats even a negative connotation, youre contributing your power to help a cause, no one is making you do it) is just whatever power the AC outputs. This is all voluntary work, why are you even factoring in the cost of them paying you back? They already made breakthroughs with folding@home...

@OP, nice work :) keep on folding, those are really cool temps

Sadly after 4 hrs of folding it was BSOD. Restarted.... o well this happens during games 2-3 hrs in. The fan can't dissipate fast enough at the point and the heat builds up. Oh well. Will probably fold with my fan settings to higher settings. Saw max of like 4200. Going to change fan settings through the HwinF064 for custom settings. 55 around 4500 rpm now instead of the default 50 was like 3000 i think. pretty bad stock fan settings i guess. I'll see if this can last all night. Probably set the settings higher if this doesn't last all night. Thanks for the help.

you really shouldnt be getting any BSOD from those temps. You try updating video drivers and what not? My m11x topped out at 65 on gpu and never had a BSOD throughout my gaming sessions.

I never insinuated that the battery would over-charge while plugged in, but it is a well known fact that battery life decreases as you use your laptop, regardless if you are using your battery or not.

If you use your laptop for 8 hours a day and then fold for 8 hours per night, you are putting DOUBLE the amount of wear on your battery than it would normally receive.

I suggest you re-read my post, i never said they should pay you, i said that they aren't going to help you pay for a replacement battery when yours wears out twice as fast because you were folding.

The battery wear of my G73 has gone up to 15% after only 9 months because it was on for 18 hours a day. I now have a little UNDER 1 hour of battery life with everything on power saving.

I have leave my m11x on for about 1 week long with only 1 break and I have had no problems; so I think you will not experiment any kind of problems if you leave it 1 night.

To clear up the issue about the battery being affected here is the info on it straight from the dell website.

Question: Can a Dell laptop battery be "overcharged"?
Answer: No, the battery is designed to stop using the charger when it reaches full charge.

Question: When docked or AC adapter is plugged into a wall outlet, am I using my battery charge?
    Answer: No.

    ive folded with many laptops.

never experienced an issues other than fan noise. lol

sure its not the best way to rack up points but im pretty sure the 335gt would rack up more PPD than a PS3. if your worried about heat just get a small fan or cooling pad for your laptop. as long as the heatsink is free of dust i dont see why it would hurt anything.

I dont know if I still have my HWMonitor logs from my m11x (back when I was a over precautious person when overclocking) and i noticed an increase in wear levels only when I believed in that myth about discharging it constantly...i went up 3% in wear level in about a couple months doing that.

When I decided to leave it on the charger most of the time, only to take it off when traveling, I didnt go up in wear level.

I dont understand how using the laptop for 8 hours (no idea what youre doing with ti, and since you have an g73 one can assume its for gaming) and then folding for 8 hours, how is that doubling the wear?

That is an arbitrary measurement going by (X) amount of wear per 8 hours. Lithium Ion batteries have no memory effect and most if not all have a controller that cuts off the power when not in use. Yes batteries degrade over time but not as drastically as what youre implying.

As for your case, I suggest a battery calibration or just new battery. I dont know whether you have been frequently discharging it or kept it on the AC. Too many unknown variables to account for in your case, but as for the OP's its relatively safe (well except his random BSOD) for him to run F@H with the AC on.

^^ batteries are warranted 1 year regardless of the type/length of your warranty.

Leaving your M11x on while you are not using it does Not affect the battery as long as it is plugged in! check my earlier post and feel free to read through the Dell Battery Faq if you do not trust what I typed earlier.

So fold all you want. Just leave it plugged in while you do it.
