On the R1 the VGA port is the only external monitor output port that can utilize either the integrated graphics card or the discrete card. Both the Display Port and HDMI port are driven exclusively by the discrete video card (i.e. it is impossible to export to a monitor via integrated gfx to either of these ports). Now that the R2 has nixed the VGA port, is it safe to assume that the R2 can only output video via the discrete card? Does optimus allow the r2 the ability for the integrated card to drive the display/hdmi ports?

there's no integrated video card in the R2. the ATIs are doing the external monitor work :)

For Optimus, all of the ports must go through the integrated (Intel) card since there is no video muxing (unlike the R1) and what ever is in the frame buffer in the integrated card is displayed. So when the dedicated(nVidia) card is used, it writes into the same frame buffer and effectively uses the integrated card to do the displaying.
