I just recently picked up an r2 and started to install some games, one of the first was Dragon Age Origins.

Question is: Is there a way to play the game without having to have an external optical drive hooked-up? Each time I run the game it says the disc is not available?

I had to purchase the game again through Steam to get it working with a disc. I'm sure there's probably a hack on the net somewhere but I didn't want to go that route.

that blows, i wonder if they give prior owners a discount? I know with BFBC2 it gives you the option of disc or online authentication.

I also have a copy of Dragon Age 2 i picked up if its the same case, i better return it.

You could try installing EA's download manager and see if you can associate the CD key from your retail game with your online account. You'd have to download the whole game, but you wouldn't need the CD.

Not sure if this still works. If you can make a successful backup of the game, just mount the game ISO file with a free Daemon tools software that acts like a virtual DVD drive.

DA2 uses online authorization so once you are installed it doesn't need the disk.

If you put your CD key into EA's Download Manager you MAY be able to download it from there. I did this with a retail DVD version of The Sims 3 and it worked.

Yep, this worked for me. Also, the GameJackal option does not work - I've tried with other games. The problem is that it still requires you to have the external DVD drive connected, otherwise it does not load the relevant device driver.
