I got my m11x for Christmas and I'm just nervous it will break or something. I take very good care of it, so should it be fine for a few 3 - 4 years?

Maintain a valid warranty and you have nothing to worry about.

    Don't worry, be happy.

Update - Owned mime for 9¼ months without a single problem. Dropped it twice, spilt coffee in the keybord (stripped down and cleaned) and it's still going.

3 months here, perfect in shape, I think besides the hinge problem, the laptop is very durable....

Agreed, other than the hinge the build quality is great. There's really no way to avoid it though. I hope the M11xR3 has an updated hinge and not just a new motherboard for Sandy Bridge (so we can get them as replacements that will last).

I've owned two M11xR1s, and nothing has happened to either so far. The one I have now has something going on with the hinge, but I use this very frequently (and don't take particularly good care of it like I do my M15x), and it hasn't broken yet.

no one can answer if it will last 3-4 years, it just came out march 2010.

now if u are asking if it will still be competitive and playing new games on med-high settings, then i'd say probably not, as comp technology moves fast...

    enjoy!

had mine 6 months, no probs yet

As DrGoodVibes already said, the real question is simply how long are you willing to extend the warranty (if I had to answer the question directly: no, the hinge won't last that long). Getting Complete Care is worth it. I have it on all three of my Dell/Alienware machines.

Agree with everyone here so far - if you want peace-of-mind, get an extended warranty on it.

If you don't have it already, extend your warranty to a 3-year warranty with some kind of accidental damage protection on it, like Dell's 3-Year Advanced Service Plan. It protects the laptop from just about anything except theft. You could literally drop your laptop out of a 10-story window onto the sidewalk, call Dell, and they will have a technician out the next day to repair / replace the laptop for you.

Warranty is *THE* most important part of a laptop... more important than any CPU, RAM, or hard drive upgrade. If you use that plan even one time (and you will - trust me), it will pay for itself.

You'll be fine. I'd recommend that you keep the felt that came between the screen and the keyboard. When you're not using it, pop the felt in, and it makes an instant oil-from-your-fingers guard.

Had mine for 6 months. Still going strong. Besides the minor hinge problem (which doesn't bother me much) I still am loving this laptop!

I'm confident that the M11x is built to last. My old MSI 1029 was taken care of and used as my main computer for almost 5 years, it's still in perfect working condition. Just ensure that your M11x never overheats and there's no reason it won't last for 5+ yrs. Mine's still perfect in every way after 9 months of heavy use, not a single scratch on the exterior/LCD. Neither is there any keyboard/trackpad ware - though I usually use an external keyboard and mouse when gaming.
