I've performed a clean install and I didn't really buy this laptop for all of the light effects and I don't really need to adjust the mousepad and security etc. Is Command Center really needed to get the laptop running like it should?

Get alienfx lite. That will control all your lights for you.

    No.

But without it you won't get to turn on/off the keyboard lights or change em colors.

Also you wont get that alienfusion deal, without which for many of us active USB suspend thing is a pain in the . Though i got R3, not sure if R2 has that.

It is a good idea to have it, it doesn't really use considerable amount of RAM or CPU, pretty much none, so it is good to have. Just in case you want different color lights, cause its cool n' stuff. I like the power plans on it, its worth installing to be honest.

If I decide not to, is it harmfull? Or is it just for the cool stuff?

You can choose not to install it. This won't affect performance.
Do keep in mind one thing, once you install a version of Command Center, never install a older version in the future, It's either the same one or a new one if available. Doing otherwise might brick your AlienFX controller.

    Cheers

    ^This.

And no, the command center is only for changing keyboard LED's. I have never used it for anything more. For me, it was simply cosmetic and I could deal without it.

leave it on the system, set your prefs and remove it from running at boot up. Simple. It takes no resources and very little space just being installed.

A lighted kb is a good thing if your environment is ever dimly lit. You do not need to light up all the other lights and you can use a generic color to cut down on any attention. When on and using say "white" others will likely never even know you have a backlit kb during the day.
