I finally received my new laptop and ran the video stress test in Counter-Strike Source after changing my settings to match my old desktop PC. The result of the stress test was 71.51 FPS on my laptop versus 82.94 FPS on my desktop. My desktop PC is over 7 years old with a P4 3.2 GHz processor and Nvidia 7800 GS video card. I used the Optimus tool to verify that the Nvidia card is kicking in and it is. Shouldn't the M11x blow that PC's benchmark out of the water?

I honestly am not sure(As I don't own one yet) but have you tried updating your drivers?
-
Source runs well except when there are explosions and smoke. Also on servers with 20+ people I also see lower performance.
-
Just looking up the stats of the 7800 gs quick, it doesn't appear the M11X should be better than your PC. The 335m has half the memory bus as your 7900gs, slower memory, around the same core speed. Your PC's CPU probably blows the m11x out of the water for older games like css that don't do much with multicore processors, too, since the max speed for one core with an I7 is 2.226ghz (IIRC), which is about 2/3rds the speed of your PC. What you got for fps'es makes sense.
-
So you're telling me the 335m isn't as good as a 4 year old AGP card? That's disappointing since I was planning to replace my old desktop with this laptop. Will I at least see a significant difference on newer, multi-core games?

The long answer is look through the gaming and benchmark threads for lots of fps numbers, but most new games play at lower fps than you get in source. 71fps is probably the highest number I've seen posted so far. Newer games tend to have better graphics which means lower fps.
For a gaming desktop replacement, you really need to go bigger than the 11" form factor if you want really good numbers in games. Laptop design is about balancing power with portability, with one being a sacrifice of the other. -
Ya, what corwinicre said. The M11x really can't be a desktop replacement, unless of course your more of a casual user. (Like me)

I tested the R2 against an old desktop (2004) I have in the closet, which is a P4 3.6Ghz or so with a 8600GT and 512MB video Ram. Crysis ran much better on the M11x then on the PC at the same resolution and details. Now my newer (2008) desktop with a quadcore and a 260GT seems to be about twice as fast as the M11x.
The only problem I have is running games at 1080P on the M11x can get a little choppier, because I'm used to the desktop 260GT. I've been happy with the performance of the games at the native LCD resolution though.
I debated getting the M15 for a desktop replacement but I'd rather have this small one for one when i travel and it is fast enough forme. -

This is more relating to the orignal post, but anyway...
The latest update to CS:S should have brought the game up to the latest version of the Source Engine (I think this was part of the whole Mac/PC cross-platform thing that they were doing), so you should be able to set it up to take advantage of multi-core CPUs now. I think the console command is mat_queue_mode n, where n is a number from -2 to 2. Play with that a little bit and see if it makes a difference, I guess. What settings were you using for the test? My R1 had a high of 128.something with mat_queue_mode 1, but maybe my settings weren't the same as yours (I have low standards). -

On a related note, has anyone else experienced lock ups when running the CSS video stress test? Even at stock speeds, the test occasionally locks up for me and requires a hard reboot.
