So, just to stop spamming http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/492232-m11x-r2-benchmarks.html thread i decided to start new one. Here is my story:

User jsgiv got 22.3 fps in crysis demo benchmark on r1 laptop. I, on the same settings, have only 18,7 fps.

We both have m11x r1, on windows 7 64bit, both cpu OCed, and gpu is on default state, both of us are using beta hybrid driver from dell page. We have only 2 differences, he have SSD and i have 7200rpm HDD, and i use Win7 Home Premium and he uses Ultimate Edition.

I even installed clean windows 7 with only drivers and updated, and still i have 18,7 fps.

    I don't get it.

That is your problem, the M11X cannot ever run it on high. Even the new iX processors only get in the low 20's FPS on high, it is a GPU bandwidth issue.

Try going DX9 Mode all medium, bump textures to high, shadows to low, try it. I get 45-85 FPS with those settings. If you want it to really pop put shaders (NOT SHADOWS, 2 different settings, shadows always low) to high and you will get 30+ consistently and it will look rather amazing.

To recap, 60+ fps average = all medium, high texture, low shadow.

30+ FPS looking better = all medium, high texture, low shadow, high shader

    Always DX9 mode.

    I have an M11xR1 SU7300 Win7 Pro with 4GB RAM and 500GB 7200RPM HDD.
I have the nVidia Beta driver from Dell with BIOS A01.

    I have my M11xR1 overclocked.

I'm constantly getting around 22.4 FSP testing on high setting using the Island fly around Crysis demo benchmark.

I don't play the game using these settings, I just used it cause others where using these setting to test.

Oh haha, I didn't realize you were worried about the 4 FPS, I thought you where worried about the low frame rate. 22 or 18 it is still unplayable at those rates, in the most intense levels those will drop to single digit.

I didn't close all other applications... and to think, I could have got more FPS. :)

    Even had Firefox running.

Guys, when you run bench in 1280x1024 do you connect your lappy to external display, or use this option:

Because if no, and you run 1280x1024 on your m11x screen, game will work only in 1280x768, thought in bench info it will be marked as 1280x1024. To insure it you can take screenshot during benchmark, and you'll see that its only 1280x768.

So could you re-run this bench in window mode which will allow true 1280x1024

Sorry to sound a tad presumptious but wouldn't an SSD have the potential to give a 3-4 fps increase due to the much faster read performance? Is it this that is causing the difference in the benchmark?

Well i thought so. But now i think the simply was testing in 768p while i was in real 1024p that's why we had such difference.

I'm not stuck with anything. Don't you understand that i worried about having absolutely same laptop as you and having 4 fps less?

Can you re-run bench with option i mentioned, windowed mode, or using external display which will really allow 1280x1024

Thank goodness for that, I final got 17.92 FPS!!!!

Same specs, just selected windowed and ignored the fact that the display window was pushed up beyond the top of the screen and that I couldn't see the stats on the top of the window ticking over in real time.
Crysis (For me) doesn't allow window handles while in game play to move the window..in my case anyway.

Not using an external monitor to test.

My 24" external ISP monitor(s) have graphics mode(slower) and games mode(faster) and in itself will alter overall statistics(slightly), thus you will never be testing like for like unless you confine testing to the M11x.

I would say, that most people would test without an external monitor unless advised.
I support unreal25 suggestion and just stick to native res (720p) and then everyone is on the same playing field.

I have no idea what a 40" Full-HD 3D LCDTV, Full-HD LCDTV and HD-Ready LCDTV would compare in performance when gaming. The processors on these things are so different. Maybe no difference when gaming via HDMI 1.3a

Believe me, I'm more happy about getting 18 FPS that than you are. :D

So you're a happy bunny now. Game ended, Everybody is a winner.

    Hey guys,

Sorry if I sound really novice but I was wondering how I run Crysis in DX9 mode with 64 bit? I am running it on an i7 and was hoping to get a few more FPS out of it just to make it run really smoothly.

    Thanks.

Even though the problem is solved now, I'm curious as to why you just didn't run it in non-windowed mode to try and get the same results as others?

Well i thought everyone knew that if you run in resolution higher then screen one game won't work or will resize image, that's why i used window mode to have true 1280x1024. Gess others didn't know such behavior and was running on full screen mode.

So i was clever and good boy, and others wasn't lol :D

    One for the history book.

Using the same Crysis benchmark test specs as in the original post with the same M11xR1 SU7300.

The original test returned an average 17.92FPS in a windowed 1280x1024 screen.
This was using Dell Beta nVidia 197.12 P03 on an M11xR1 SU7300 BIOS A01

Using a switchable nVidia 260.63 driver in a windowed 1280x1024 screen, the following results were obtained using the same M11xR1 SU3700, but with BIOS A05 and nVidia 260.63.

    An average 17.865FPS was returned.

It is mooted that the limits of the GT335M and SU7300 CPU are really holding back marked rises in FPS on the M11xR1. That said the current nVidia 260.63 does appear to be more stable than my previous Dell nVidia 197.72 A01 driver and on a par with the Dell Beta nVidia 197.12 P03 for performance.

Just thought I'd add to this post as it does hold a fair portion of information with results in a tight framework.

As always, all credit for the nVidia driver goes to Nautis and all his hard work.

Alternatively, you can right click the exe and pop in -dx9 at the end of the target.

I ran Crysis on mostly high in DX9 and got a range of 30-40+ frames and it still looked super good. I might add that I was running it at 1024x768 though.

Put -dx9 after the crysis.exe (right click and tag it on the end). Also run in 32Bit mode because for some reason 64bit takes a slight hit.

Also google for cuban's crysis custom configs. You'll get an installer with improved TOD settings (Time of Day) which can improve the way the game looks. The installer is split into two Catagories DX9 and DX10 mode. From there you then select from Low, Medium, High and Next Gen PC settings. Go for medium or high. Make sure v-sync is off, AA is off an also try applying some anisotropic filtering.

Have a look through THIS as well.

Could someone do me a favor? If you have an i7 M11x r2 can you run the benchmark on DX9 Native Rez High settings with the GPU and i7 OC'd as high as they will go using the new Turbo tweak. I'd be interested to see how the game runs.

    Cheers

Thank you @some_guy for humouring me. :D

The above post of a Crysis benchmark by @some_guy was performed with an M11xR1 with a modified CPU clock at 2.0Ghz. compared to the standard M11xR1 clock of 1.6Ghz (Over-clocked)

This shows that an M11xR1 gains no improvement in FPS with an improved or upgraded processor.

The Nvidia GPU is the limiting factor.

Some gains can be made with 'sensible' over-clocking of the Nvidia GPU.

Thanks again @some_guy for your input.

Crysis is the only game I have and I benchmark my M11x GPU against it. :)

    hey no prob.

i was under the impression that this game was GPU bound. i guess this makes it fact in the case of the M11x.

Yerp, we say these things, but it's nice to see the proof.

Even in DX9 mode it still looks impressive for it's day and very playable on the M11x.

Hay, given you've modified a CPU, what are you like at modifying a GPU? :D

this was my first laptop CPU hard mod. DavyGT and nando4 laid out the logic for me. i just grasp the stuff fast i guess, and ran with it. they really deserve the credit for the mod. i was just a tester for thier logic.

the GPU volt mod was talked about but we were in the middle of other things at the time. after i get my RAM back from RMA and try out 2.4Ghz ill ask DavyGT about the volt mod again for the GPU.
