I recently posted that I thought my GPU was failing because randomly I would have crashes and have to force restart my computer. It would freeze and emit a buzzing noise. I reverted back to factory drivers (from 260.99) and made sure my computer was not overclocked at all.
But now I am beginning to think, this all began when I installed my Intel 6200 Wifi Card. I overlooked it because I didn't think It could cause crashing. But recently my bro and i were playing Black Ops together and we both D/C'd for a second. But after 3 seconds of lag my computer froze up and his returned to gameplay. I know it sounds weird and I have never heard anything like this but is it possible that when I lose signal my computer crashes?

I can't really say for sure. It's certainly possible, though it would surprise me. I can think of two things you can try to help isolate your problem.
1) Disable the wireless card and see if you still have a problem.
2) If you still have the old card, reinstall it and see if you still have a problem. -
Edit: I know this isnt frequent, but I don't want something to get damaged if it is damaging. -
So, wired isn't an option for you? Can you put your old card back in for a few days?
Also, has this only happened while gaming? -
Edit: What I did was uninstall the older (CD) driver. And installed the newer ones off of the intel site. I also opened my m11x and made sure it was connected securely. Now ill use it for a bit and hope. If not Ill try using the older card :/ -
Update: The driver wasn't the problem. I swapped to the DW WLAN card. Hopefully thats the solution. Otherwise - Any other suggestions? I would hate to part with this computer

In hindsight what i didn't do was try and tweak the settings for the network card from device manager. A few years ago, on a totally different laptop i used to get periodic problems with an intel network card, after a lot of going back and forth it inexplicably turned out to be connected to the card's own power saving mode. When i disabled the card's power save from within device manager the lockups stopped. That's not to say that that is the specific problem in this case but it might be worth a look before returning the card. -
Yeah so far, so crash free. Lets keep it up -
I also had the same problem. I guess some R1's just don't like the card.
-
I am just SOOOO glad my GPU isn't fried. I've been worried I would have to send my M11x in during my busiest semester this year. all I can say is w00t!
-
Could also have been ram in it if this doesn't work out for you.
-
I bought an Intel 6250 (non ES) and installed it in my m11x R1, and I've ALSO been having the random freeze issue. It doesn't happen at all if I disable the network adaptor from the Network panel, but if it's enabled, it will freeze.
Sometimes it takes 20 minutes, sometimes it's good for a day, but it always freezes.
One last solution I'm going to try is pulling the Intel 6250 drivers from the Dell support site and using those instead of the drivers from Intel's support site. If that doesn't work, I'm going back to the Dell card. -
Agh...i have a intel 6200 as well, i'm also getting a freezing issue, although i really can't say if it's the same cause as you, 1 time, pc completely froze while backing up hard drive, reset pc 2nd time worked, and 2 freezes trying to download the same podcast off itunes. Seems to be no issues with the ram from memtest.
-
Well, it still froze up after a day. How frustrating. I flipped the laptop and put the Dell card back in, and so far no problems, though my wireless reception isn't as strong as it was with the Intel card.

Why this would be the case doesn't make sense to me, and i might be reaching here but i'm wondering if there's a way to throttle a network card to a specific max DL/upload speed. -
This has probably already been checked, but needs to be asked. Did you uninstall the DW WLAN with "Remove Programs?" DW WLAN was causing system failures for me when I wasn't even using it (80% bluetooth tethering 20% WLAN usage).

I will be installing an Intel 6230 (WiFi+BT) card soon in my R1, I will report if it has any similar problems

May not solve anything, but does explain the Advanced WiFi settings.

Well it was for sure the 6200. I took it out and have run 4 days without a single crash or stutter.
As for the documentation I would not know the first thing about changing advanced settings to make it compatible. -
Alright so I installed the 6200 about a week ago and have used it ever since. Since I installed it wow has been "stuttering." What happens is I'll be playing along fine and then everything will freeze for 2-6 seconds and then the game will catch up. Basically it seems like lag spikes. Is this what other people are experiencing? Is there a fix for the 6200 or does it seem that the only resolution is to put back in the old card?
As a final note I usually don't get kicked offline and my computer hasn't locked up completely. -

Used the 6230 in my R1 last night for a bit and worked fine. Will keep you all posted as I use it more.

In december i installed the intel 6200 in my R1, it works flawlessly with the drivers that come in the cd. But then i installed the "latest" drivers from intel download page and the problems began, random freezes, that needs forced restart, first as other said i think it was the gpu, but then i rollback the driver and my problem ends. now it works fine. my driver version is:13.0.0.107

Thanks so much, Ill give those drivers a try.

Hey I had to chime in
I recently bought the 6300 N for my m11x to replace the DW 1520 and I was having the same problems, with the latest drivers it was crashing all the time, not even BSOD, just the screen would freeze indefinitely
right before I gave up I tried the old drivers suggested a few posts above and incredibly I had gone a few days without a crash
Though last night I was downloading a 6GB game on Steam and it crashed, and then it crashed again this morning as I was resuming the download so hmmm, idk, but if it's mostly crash free I think I can live with that, although I wish someone understood what the heck is causing it to crash exactly. -
Sorry to thread-jack, there is another thread with some more info about these issues now.
As to the freezing issue I can only attest that I tried the older drivers which came with the CD and like kamk2k8 it seemed fine at first but must have been placebo because it was freezing as normal after about a day of crash free goodness.
