If you want to keep your laptop cooler when you're not at home, or to supplement your cooler, I also suggest some sort of elevation mod using rubber pads (typically regular rubber case feet found on desktop computers):

I wouldn't use one of those. It will block the fan vent on the bottom of the laptop. After a while those things become very warm as well and actually make the laptop warmer. I have one and it hasn't gotten any use for over a year now.

Good idea I need some sort of elevation mod. And I know they get hot I was reading that. I need a temp solution for the bed. I just feel bad about it sucking up lent and stuff into the laptop. I hate it but I use my laptop most in bed. I won't be doing any intensive gaming in bed. But I want to protect the laptop. and try to facilitate air flow. I was hoping that the dimples in this would allow air to flow freely. As opposed to the bed. However I will be watching movies and possible video editing.

I use an old, hardcover book from college. That way the fan vent isn't blocked by the bed.

You could just buy a piece of plexiglass or somthing of similar hardness and cut it to the size you want, then use some rubber standoffs to make a gap inbetween the plexi andthe laptop. cheap and easy, prob under $10

For lap use I look for smooth bottom and rounded corners. Many coolers are intended for desks and have open bottoms and hard lines that after a while can be uncomfortable. Anything that fits that criteria will also work for a bed.

The other considerations are airflow direction and fan placement.

Bonus tip: there are some cheap ones out there that have 4 legs. If you invert the whole cooler the legs can be used to hold the laptop for LOTS of airflow while providing a smooth bottom. I did this for a while because I was getting them free. Amazon.com: USB Powered Slim smart NoteBook Cooler Pad w/ 3 Built-in Flash LEDs for Laptop Computer: Electronics
