If you don't mind buying Dell Certified Refurbished then just keep an eye on their website - I picked up my R1/4gb RAM/500gb HDD for $499 when they had a sale a few weeks back.

They also have good deals on the R2 units, you just have to keep an eye out.

I check "Dealnews" dotcom pretty much daily.

What kind of shape are these refurbs in usually? Are they identified as scratched or dented, etc?

My refurbished m11x came looking and acting like it was brand new. Not a scratch on it anywhere - and for all practical purposes it was like I was the original owner pulling it out of the box and powering it up for the first time. It didn't come in retail packaging though - so the box I pulled it out of was the shipping box - and the laptop is held in place with some Saran Wrap looking film that keeps it suspended and away from the edges of the packaging.

Also included was the power adapter, owners manuals, etc. - but the Alienware cloth sleeve that the m11x comes with wasn't in the box. I wasn't disappointed at all though. I had already purchased a kick-butt Alienware neoprene sleeve from a 3rd party.

No complaints AT ALL with my purchase. $499 was an absolute steal in my mind.

Same here bought an m11x R1 for 540.00 on the out let site. It came with a 1 1/2 inch crack on the upper right screen. Called Dell to repair they declined and build the R2 in my spec's  new in the retail box. Then I got a 3 year extended warranty through Square Deal drops and spills for 119.00 with Xmas 30% off.
