Hi guys, first time trying to use my R3 at work today with my display port to vga adaptor. I can't get my display to duplicate so that what is being projected and what's on my laptop screen is the same.

Using "windows button + P" I can successfully select "computer only", "extend" or "projector only", but "duplicate" never works. I couldn't even get extend to work until i found a tick box in the nvidia control panel.

I tested my cable at home using the vga input on my monitor and it automatically duplicated. I didn't think there'd be any difference using a projector at work. I played for a while and usually this stuff doesn't stump me but I'm definitely stuck.

    Ideas?

P.S. I tried searching but after nearly an hour I figured it's time to ask :)

What resolution are you running at, for duplicate you need to set a resolution that both the internal display and projector support.

Projector can do 1280x1024, laptop was at 1024x768. Perhaps they're not compatible. I assumed anything below 1280x1024 would be fine for the projector.
    Good comment, thanks!

OK, tried setting both displays to the same resolution and then selected duplicate ... didn't work. Tried a couple of different common resolutions with no luck. Still stumped on this one.

Also, I tried running both displays off the one GPU to see if that helps but it doesn't seem to allow it - I always have to run one with Intel and the other with Nvidia.

    So confused ... :-(

If it makes you feel any better, i have a similar setup, using a hdmi cable to a monitor and i cannot get it to duplicate... even in the screen resolution menu there is no duplicate option. I just tested it on mine when i read this to see if it was just your specific setup or something. I have no solution though :(

On my display port adapter, the protrusion on the top of the adapter nearest the computer display port out acts as an on/off switch. It was not obvious from the instructions on how to use, but after screwing with it I accidently pressed the top pulling it out, as I pushed and pulled the display switched on. Could it be this simple for you also?

This is the adapter port I have for mine...

I haven't come up with any solutions yet either, but I'll add my experience that has worked at home.

I use a HDMI to DVI cable to connect my m11x to my Dell 2707WFP monitor (no hdmi input). I haven't noticed any issues with this setup, it works how I want it to. I can't recall if "Extend" mode works, but I've tried the others.

Displayport to VGA adaptor with VGA cable connecting from m11x to same Dell monitor. Automatically Duplicated laptop display on the monitor. I was able to select projector only and display only. I didn't try extend.

At work: Displayport to VGA adaptor with VGA cable into wall input. Wall input connects through to projector on ceiling. This is the one that doesn't duplicate, but does everything else. Maybe all the extra connectors in the wall-to-projector section limit my options.

Are you referring to the plug release button? ("eject button")
My displayport plug has "teeth" that hold it in place when plugged in. You have to press in on the top of the plastic housing of the plug to allow the teeth to release and unplug. Perhaps somehow these teeth influence the quality of the connection? (seems unlikely)

You cable doesn't seem to have this. I can't see the protrusion you're referring to in the pictures.

    I bought this one

It is hard to see the protrusion on my adapter, on yours (from the picture) I would press on the top triangle after it is connected... at least that is where I am pressing on mine...

I will try my adapter and connector on a similar workplace projector set-up today and let you know if I have problems. I think that fact that you have little problem at home says something about the other setup... maybe a detection problem?? Maybe hook the computer up with the projector off then turn it on? Maybe, like my monitor at home, the projector wants to be set to "see" the proper input? All sorts of possibilities AV setup possibilities there...

Some good ideas there. thanks. I tried connecting the cables with the projector off, then turned on projector - no luck. I tried with the projector on and the computer asleep, then woke up and tried duplicate after logging in - no luck. Anyway, variations on the plug in before/after projector is on/off theme didn't seem to work.

I keep using extend and drag the window I want to show to the projector screen, then turn my back on everyone while I look at the same screen as them. Not the best, but workable for now.

Using a projector set-up at work, Projector: ON, Computer: ON, but all connections initially unplugged..... I initially could not get the computer to recognize the additional display (using the display port to female VGA connector, to be able to use same on projector). I let the projector run through a scan to see if it could find a connection... nope. Then I tried a USB connector (which was also available)... my R3 added some Epson drivers and I had a dual display within minutes. Still this USB connector is not a common available feature in typical AV equipped meeting rooms...

then I unplugged everything, turned everything off and tried it again. Using the display port adapter, again, with no initial connection, I unplugged it a couple of times and that seemed to do the trick. I feel as if it is a hand shake issue....

Not sure if it was a windows problem or a display port issue, but when I repeated the experiment... I had exactly the same issue and solved it by plugging in the display port adapter multiple times....could just be that I was am not making the connection on a casual plug-in.... in any case, it is working for me.

Later in the day, again with everything down for hours, I went back and ran a meeting off the R3 using the display port... no detectable problems.

None of this probably helps you...?

Hey thanks for that detailed response. It does help.

I had an interesting experience yesterday that repeated today. I connected to the projector in another room to the one I'd tried before. Automatic duplication!

But, the resolution was like 800x600 and the projector is capable of at least 1024x768 so I increased resolution. Duplication lost - resolutions didn't match so parts of the screen were cut off. From that point onwards I had issues like the projector being the main screen, even when I'd set it the other way around, I couldn't get duplicate back, I couldn't get Computer only. Extend and projector only worked though. Later in my own time, after much fiddling, I right clicked in the nVidia control panel, and found a duplicate option. I had to rush away and couldn't test how it would work (resolution changes etc) but I felt I had a solution.

Used that same room again today. Laptop asleep lid shut, projector off, connected the displayport to vga adaptor and vga cable from wall socket. Turned on projector, opened laptop to wake from sleep. Duplicate worked instantly again. I didn't change the resolution, just was grateful to not have to fiddle and got on with work :)

Still haven't solved the duplicate issue in the original room I had issues in... it's a work in progress... maybe this thread will help someone else out one day :)

Has anyone had any luck on keeping a stable HD duplicated monitor on the R3?

I actually tried this once but as Iceman said, duplicate just won't duplicate D:

I find if I keep the nvidia control panel open I have much better success at getting my display to duplicate.

I move between 4 different projectors and two desktop displays, and it always remembers my preferred settings now. That is, as long as I've got the nvidia control panel up. If I ever forget, a quick click in the icon in the notification area brings up the control panel window. Usually it auto-corrects but sometimes I just have to click on the "set up multiple displays" link in the task pane and it "wakes up", so to speak, and reconfigures my displays to my usual preference.

    Unplug/replug also works sometimes.

Note: I'm still using a displayport to vga adapter for all my connections except the home monitor which is hdmi.

Gotcha, I'll try to keep the control panel on then. I might as well play around with the drivers, there might be a bug fix with a newer version :D
If I find anything else I'll just go ahead and post it

    Thanks

The control panel can only be used if card is active or available so in an odd way I suppose it is forcing GPU activity and closing the loop. :)
