    Hey guys,

I think something is up with my CPU.

Earlier on tonight I decided to have a whirl on Left 4 Dead 2. The game seemed to be running alot slower than normal so I went into the settings menu to check what was up. The settings were the same as I had before, everything set to high but this time the Multicore rendering option was blanked out.

I quit and opened CPU-Z to see if anything was abnormal. To my surprise, at the bottom it read that I had only 1 core and 2 threads instead of the normal 2 cores and 4 threads which I previously had.

I have no idea how long it has been like this as I haven't had much time to game in the last few weeks but I have tried restarting multiple times and reinstalling CPU-Z with no change.

I would be really grateful if someone could help me out... :(

    Thanks

What does that change? Mine is set to one in MSCONFIG and my CPU Z still checks out fine with 2 cores and 4 threads.

If for some reason when the OS was installed or hardware changed, or CPU not detected properly, it will update the correct CPU cores.

I was actually able to set mine to 1 CPU core and then back to 2 today (was trying to find a way to disable hyperthreading since BIOS doesn't allow it).

Try disabling the OC in the BIOS and restarting? Maybe because of your 160 MHz overclock the system is acting weird.

Thanks heaps for your suggestions guys but it hasn't worked.

@MassiveOverkill I went into msconfig but the number of processors box was already checked at 2. I changed it to 1, restarted, changed back to 2, restarted but to no avail.

@ultimablade I disabled OC but noting changed.

I'm getting a bit worried now.

my guess is RMA it. CPU's don't go bad often, but it occasionally happens.

Check it at 4... windows doesn't see two cores, it only see 4 threads. My i7 930 shows up as 8 processors in the windows device manager.

@jeremyshaw Sadly my only options for number of processors is either 1 or 2.

    Thanks anyway...

Uncheck the number of processes box altogether.
This is how mine came as default.

1 week after I got my Alienware, I checked to see if this enabled and it wasn't.
When I enabled it, winodws only showed 2 threads.

@BitByteBit Yes, it worked! I unchecked the box and now 2 cores and 4 threads are visible. Thankyou!

Thanks to everyone for their help and input, I am very grateful! +Rep to all
