As luck would have it, the hinge on my laptop began acting up and would crack and come apart like it is notoriously known, and right after my warranty expired. I did my research and successfully fixed the hinge but in the process I broke my screen because I wasn't careful enough. I have my laptop hooked up to an external monitor so it's just the screen I messed up. I'm writing this in hopes of getting some good advice as to how to go about getting my screen fixed/replaced, i.e. is there a trusted website to buy a replacement screen? should I take it to a place where they fix electronics (best buy/geek squad)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Screen was cracked because of the broken hinge. From what I have read around here, I believe there might be a free out of warranty service for the well known hinge flaw of this particular notebook.

Could you please elaborate - how did you break your screen? Dropped it and it shattered?

Should have done a bit more research. If it was just a hinge issue and only needed warranty coverage, Dell is allowing a one time out-of-warranty replacement.

For screens, I suggest buying a used model if unable to just find screen. The forum has them come up for sale every now and then. I think another poster with dead MB might be looking to sell.

It was my own fault. One of the steps for fixing the hinge was to remove the plastic part over the actual screen. I pressed too hard and the delicate thing cracked from the top right.

Admittedly I really thought I was out of luck. I would have never guessed Dell to do something as an out-of-warranty thing. But I guess now it's too late; my problem is no longer the hinge, only my screen.

If you are too afraid to fix the screen yourself and want to hire someone to fix it for you...whatever you do, do not take it to geek squad. There are local computer repairmen who will do the job cheaper and much quicker.

How did you fix your hinges?? With glue or something like that??

For me you have a broken screen because your hinges were broken. I will call dell and ask for a one time out-of-warranty replacement. They will change all the top, including the screen...

Yeah I used epoxy. I thought about calling Dell but it would be pretty obvious that I fixed the hinge myself. Does anyone know if I can still try and go for this out-of-warranty or?

Call them and ask, its worth a shot. Your already out of warranty so the worst that could happen is they say no. But they may fix it anyways.
