-
Congrats on your purchase, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Anyway, if you need to get your hinges fixed then call Dell and they should send someone out to fix it if it's still under warranty.
If not, than I've heard of other members having to send it to Dell to have it fixed.
As for the processor, no. It's soldered onto to mobo and no one has bothered to replace it yet.
For the cost, time and labor I think it is cheaper to buy an R3.
Also contact Dell about the name plate on the bottom. You should be able to get a new one but it might cost you.
Ask politely first to see if you can score a free one. If not, it shouldn't be too expensive.
Hope it helps and enjoy your M11x! -
Dell will do one free out of warrenty hinge replacement if yours go bad. Mines starting to catch on the bottom part of my r1 so its just a matter of time now...
-
even if ur not the original owner? they wouldn't mind right?
-
They shouldn't.
If they do, just say that you've misplaced the receipts and they will most likely understand. -
2) If your friend has not already had a problem with hinges, then it is likely that this laptop never will. But even if it does have a hinge problem, Dell will repair it regardless of warranty status.
Dell to fix faulty M11x hinges the world over regardless of warranty status -- Engadget
3) Nope, you cannot upgrade the CPU. CPU is soldered onto the motherboard, and you already have the top-end CPU for that laptop model. If you want to put money into this laptop for a meaningful upgrade, replace the mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) in there with a solid state drive (SSD). See some of the videos in my signature for why an SSD kicks butt.
4) Yes, Dell will honor whatever warranty remains on the laptop, even if the laptop change owners. You will first need to transfer ownership of the laptop into your name, though (use this link Ownership-Tag Transfer | Dell). Simply calling them up and saying "I lost my receipt" will not work. They will provide service only to the registered owner (you)
5) You'll need to call Alienware to get a new nameplate engraved.
6) Yes, upgrading RAM is very possible to do. Upgrading from 4GB --> 8GB is a very common upgrade among Alienware M11x R1/R2/R3 owners. Just look for an 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 SODIMM RAM kit. Speed (1066Mhz / 1333Mhz) and timings of the RAM do not matter for an Alienware M11x R2, so just buy whatever is cheapest. The RAM kits cost around $35-$40 on sale, and that should do the trick. -
thank you alot man this really helps me i love alienware i dont know how people can hate them so much they are reliable good for evreything
-
also where can u add bluetooth to this laptop?
-
-
very cool :] also how hard is it to put new thermal compound on the cpu does the whole board need to come out or i can just pop out the heatsink from the bottom? feels kinda hot when i touch where the cpu is at
-
Oh yea, the bluetooth module needs a screw to screw it down to the motherboard and it does not come with the bluetooth module. So do not forget to ask for that when you make your order.
-
i also have another question it says i7 and when i hit right click and start manager and under performance i know i7 is a quad core and i see 4 cores but this processor is not hyper threat like the new m14 like my nephews i7 core correct? he has 8 squares
-
The i7 processors in the M11x are actually only 2 cores. It shows 4 because 2 of them are virtual cores from hyperthreading.
-
so the m11x r2 i7 is only a dual core?
-
Yeah, it's an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) dual core. It has 4 threads, which I think are like virtual cores, and helps with multitasking and other stuff.
Have you checked out Throttlestop? It is pretty much a necessity for getting the most performance possible from your M11x. Definitely worth a look! -
okay i get it i haven't overlocked it yet just because i think i need to put new thermal paste on it and stick the bluetooth in it :] just feels it gets really hot even on the bottom case
-
Blowing some compressed air into the air vents and fan to clean out some of the built up dust has reduced temps pretty drastically for a few people around here. Give it a try if you haven't already.
-
Keeping the laptop fully assembled and blowing air into the laptop will just circulate the dust somewhere else in your laptop. -
how is the anti glare screen work any of u have bought one? i would really like to know i took it outside i couldn't see anything at all ughh
-
Okay sorry for not posting a while now i transfer my laptop and sent it in to dell for the free hinge fix i could say its so awesome they put a whole new screen on it i really love it now i can say this laptop was worth what i payed for and when i looked through the case it came with the guy paid 906 in total :] love it soon my bluetooth will be here and my 8gb of ram just gonna wait on a hd :] thanks guys! btw dell support was really good chris and terry helped me alot and im getting my nameplate as well
