Moving forward, this will be the discussion thread for BlackOps as it relates to the 11x (both R1 and R2). When posting on issues, please be sure to specifiy:

1. Which model you have (r1 or R2)
2. What the issue is
3. Current display driver(s) installed or tried
4. in-game Graphic settings

In addition to the tips Steve posted above, you should also try lowering your Graphics Quality settings.

I have problems playing the game in general. I have an m11x r1 that I purchased in the summer.
I have followed all of your steps.
raising the game priority to normal or higher for some reason makes it so choppy, that it becomes unplayable.
I even turned the resolution to 800x600. It got better, but whenever a lot is happening, it gets choppy.
I had the same exact experience when I was playing BFBC2, and I think BFBC2 was smoother.

What I heard was, that black ops had almost the same system requirements as the first 2 modern warfare games.
( I played Call of duty modern warfare just fine. Not sure about MW2. )

I disabled vsync and
I did set my m11x to Increased Performance before playing.

Is it not possible to play on default resolution on high settings smoothly?
If I cant solve this.. then theres another 60$ down the drain...

 

Hopefully, treyarch will be like DICE and put out some better optmization in it's patches.

 

is that what they did in the first modern warfare?
Because I played that very smoothly on high settings. I had no problem with it.

 

Yea I agree here, I sent my M17x R2 for repairs this morning, so I bought the game from Best Buy on the way back from Best Buy. It doesn't play smooth on the M11x R1, so I'm going to have to wait till the M17x R2 gets back from the depot.

 

@JRUU - Have you tried lowering the steam priority as well? Please be specific.
Remember to try and lower the game priority to see if this helps. Try Below Normal and low to see if that helps. I have seen others with quad core processors experience major game play issues. I would highly optimize your start up features, try different priority settings and see what happens.

Also, you may want to try Single Player first as it's sometimes easier to get repeatable results. Once you get SP running then switch to MP.

I have R1, 1.73OC, 197 dell driver. Started playing single player and it is UNPLAYABLE due to low FPS. I know that there are bugs in the game but I do not think our R1's will be able to handle the game at all .

EDIT: Tried changing priority, set AA to none, no shadows, lo res, and low quality and the game still is extremely choppy

 

I have lowered the steam priority to low.
Black ops was originally on low when I was setting up the priorities.

When I first got the m11x, I uninstalled a few programs that doesnt affect the originality of the laptop. ( I havent touched alienFX or AlienSense )
Some programs was probably the Mcfee anti virus. replaced it with avast.
What start up features should I get rid of?

and oh, I have been testing on single player.

 

Are you sure on the GT S240!? The GTS240 is a 9800gt rebrand for OEMs... The GT240 is a 40nm card that is the larger (and much more powerful) cousin of the gt335m [GTS240 is the fastest of the mentioned]

 

Has anyone with a m11x either versions had any success yet ?

 

nope. I have the M11x R2 and I was reading people on steam forums complaining about their FPS rates and the lag they have with the game. I think that the game needs to be patched and there is nothing we can do for now...

ps. also my r2 heats up when playing :/

 

Well guess it makes studying for accounting easier knowing that at the moment it wouldn't be any fun anyways

I think you can post direct links, but hopefully Activision recognizes the short comings and some updates are released soon. I don't want to have to wait for my M17x R2 to get here, not that it'll run great on that either.

 

Has anyone tried using Throttlestop with The m11x?

 

Many people has tried throttle stop with the m11x. There is a thread about it on this forum... "supercharging..."

It does not help, atleast not for me...especially when im not overclocked

 

I really hope I won't have to go back to my 360 for Black Ops. With any luck, Treyarch will push out a patch by the end of the week and/or the servers will adjust to the traffic.

 

same here studying for med. in a perfect world this would be solved by monday after my last exam might just get it on xbox if no1 gets it working by then

 

see what I dont want is having to rely on other programs/apps or having to switch around the settings all the time when I'm playing games.
Reading other complaints around the internet, the best hope for is what DR650SE said.

my R1 average about 10fps /w intend shooting.... but on my desktop it run around 60-70fps /w 4x AA/Max Res/Extra Quality etc. Our m11x spec seem to pass the minimum spec requirement but some how still can't run the game.

 

I managed to beat it into a playable fps on my m11x.

tweaked the config files to turn off a few things,

turned off cloud sync, turned off steam in game.
started black ops multiplayer, alt tabbed out, opened task manager, changed the priority of steam to low, changed the affinity of it so its only using 1 core, changed black ops to high priority, turned off AA, graphics on medium @ native res.



Ok it's not as smooth as it should be though, there's definitely some issues with the optimization of the game which i hope they can fix in a patch, the only thing i have at is occasionally it seems like its ignoring my mouse movements which is kinda annoying.

 

This is quite a scandal. This is a AAA ++ title not working on the one machine it was pratically designed for!! I want my money back. When ever you want to play a game on these m11x, you know you are in for altleast 2-3 DAY OF FIDDLING. I am computer/software engineer by day, why do I have to be one at night also! I put 1500$ of hard earn money on a top of the line machine and plays worse then a random clone I could of bought in a strip mall joint. Shame on Dell.

 

How is this Dell's fault?

 

ummm... i seem to be getting average 25-30 FPS in single player with 1366x768, Texture quality extra, aa off, Trilinear, max Antisotropic Filtering, shadows yes, Bullet Impacts yes, Large number of corpses. Using M11x R2 i7. Shall I make a video???

Well, for playing multiplayer in steam. It would seemed Safe mode is the best thing. Otherwise, I get a black screen.

 

the Nvidia 260.99 drivers. I'm actually getting from 30-45 FPS most of the time.

 

Same, getting some good single player FPS. Only problem I encountered was black screen at the startup. Would get sound but no video.

I was able to solve this by going into the config.cfg file located "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty black ops\players"

do ctrl+f and look for "seta r_fullscreen "1"" (w/o outer quotes) change the 1 to a 0

I believe that should allow you to see the game and set the video properties to your liking. Make sure to reject running in safe mode and reject letting the game automatically customize options when prompted.

Personally I am running latest drivers, with build listed below. I did the suggestions Steve suggested in the OP, set AA to x2 and textures to High. Only played the first level for 10 minutes or so for testing purposes but was getting very smooth game play.

 

It's not the machine fault first of all, even peeps with i7 rig are having problem, it the game which fail to give us open beta before launching, so i guess you have to be patient on the patch or write a big complaint to Treyarch.

 

This is what you get when you get rid of Infinity Ward and replace them with Treyarch. Did you really expect the quality of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare??

game crashes when I enable AA. I just get a black screen, then I have to ctrl+alt+del to exit game. anyone else getting any luck on enabling AA?

 

ok kiddies. here is a video of black ops maxed out. 16xAA. no tweaks were done in the video. I was using throttle stop. I tried the seta r_multithread 1 after but no difference. enjoy...

ok, i have a problem. i have black ops and when i start the game i dont get video/picture but i get the sound.. whats wrongg? im using the official nvidia reference drivers from nvidia.com for my m11x R2. HELP ME

 

what i did was ctrl+alt+delete and exit game by end process. after that restart the game in safe mode(not windows safe mode). should work after that.

 

World at War was freaking awesome. So yes, I was. It also looks like Steam's cloud thing is overloaded as well so you can't place all the blame on Treyarch.

Nice video Mazdaspeed6! How's the FPS during multi-player? I just bought the game and will test it out on my R2 i7 soon.

 

@Mazda - do you see a difference in performance between 16aa vs 2aa? I will say that the game looks great on your m11x. I dont think the graphics are as intense as MW2, but that is just an opinion. Please keep posting any ideas or configs you see that can increase the possibilities for smooth gameplay.

gameplay on 2x is 35-40FPS. its the same as no AA.

 

haven't tried on multiplayer. I'm setting up on my M17x now.

 

well i got the screen back, but apparenrly when i max out the settings, the screen goes black again..

Okay this game is working pretty flawlessly for me on my R2.

I've only tested SP, **Edit: Tested MP. Works Great. See Below** and only the intro campaign. Avg. is 30fps dipping sometimes to 24.

Nvidia Control Panel White List settings-
Ansio set to 16x
Single Display Performance Mode
Power Management: Prefer Maximum Performance

In Game Settings:
Video: 1366x768
AA: Off
Dynamic Shadows: Off
Anything set to Automatic, was set as Automatic
Bullet Decals: yes
Number of Bodies:Medium

My R2 Settings:
Nvidia Drivers: 261.00 (Developer Driver that was linked on here before)
*This may be what's making the difference*
GPU Clocks: Stock
(I've had my clocks set at 533/1233/875 for months with no issue. Until I noticed Game freezes and crashes with MOH: SP and Force Unleashed II, When I went back to stock clocks with TS enabled, I got great performance with no issues)

I am going to try my regular GPU OC settings as listed above, next

FSB: 162
TS: Enabled Force TDP/TCP: 8 Power Limits: 200
Gamebooster Enabled
Game running through Steam.
Playing SP game with Microsoft XBox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows

Like I said, I'm early in the game but I am getting an avg of 30fps with these settings and it looks pretty gorgeous on the m11x screen with tolerable dips.

I'm going to try with my normal GPU OC settings and the latest Realtek Driver (2.54 out 11/5/10) and see how it goes.

I'll report back any worthy differences.

I haven't tried MP, yet, so who knows if that's cool. But SP is very playable so far.

I think the big difference might be the 261.00 Developer Drivers. A quick search of the threads should be able to turn up a link.

EDIT UPDATE:

I upgraded to Realtek 2.54 and OC'd my GPU to 525/1260(link)/875

Performance improved substantially and the FPS is avg. 45-60FPS. yet it can still dip to the 30's. But I'd compare it to similar performance as MW2. It's running like a dream.

As for MP?

I did have some issues and a crash. I rebooted and turned off 16x Ansio in Nvidia Control Panel.

**Important!! On both SP and MP the screen will go black at default game settings. The typical problem of Optimus not kicking in the Nvida. To bypass this, use task manager to shut down the game (somebody more savvy prolly knows a better way) Reboot, and when you run the game again, run it in safe mode (it will ask you if you want to). Once the game screen loads up in safe mode you can set all your settings in game to 1366x768 or what have you, and it should load fine from then on.**

Once I got passed the black screen of no return, and got into the game through safe mode, I set things to 1366x768 and then turned off shadows and set details to Auto. I got into a match and played the whole round with no crashes avg. 45+-60fps

It seems the 261.00 Nvidia Developer drivers and Realtek 2.54 drivers really make a difference in performance of this game. I highly recommend those who are having troubles to try them.

(So nice to be playing a good FPS MP on the M11x and not having to deal with PB. I keep falling harder and harder for this little netbook the more I spend time with her)

I trust others will get this game running right soon.

The M11x can definitely handle it

 

Any good experience with r1? If r2 get 45-60 fps i don't think it's possible that r1 show only 10 fps.

I have got the full screen working. Have done the tweaks advised on page 1 but the minute I apply aa of any kind I get black screen again. How can I get aa working??

edit: seems to be working now. On a different note. When the game is loading it also has a black screen for a while? anyone else get this? surely there should be something more than a black screen?!!

I dont have long to benchmark at moment but did a small bit on FRAPS. It seems to be very erratic though. Nor really that enjoyable to play really. Here is the log

Yes, I also get an extremely long screen before the game engine loads. I almost thought it crashed, but it kicked in soon enough. It's long, feels like at least 30-45 seconds.

But at least the game is playable right?

It was almost impossible to play campaign. I did the network throttling and actually able to play(barely) campaign, God forbid if more than 3 people are on the screen shooting and explosions. It is almost unplayable.

I got to mulitplayer and it is just about NIGHT and DAY. It is practically smooth other than some lag spikes here and there.

I just don't get it, it seems just like MW2. So I quit and started MW2 immediately and I get like 30-40fps COMPLETELY SMOOTH like butter on campaign and mulitplayer. then I quit and went to play BFBC2 and SMOOTH like butter as well. I start up COD BOs again and its like I am running Pentium 1 with 16mb memory.

I think it is the game and not our PC's. Do you agree?

It's strange but your right it does load and is playable, just. I have updated realtek but not video drivers. It seems to really peak and trough FPS wise. One second it's up at 50FPS it then plummets down to nearly single figures. This will happen irrelevant of explosions etc.
Like I said before will mess with settings after work and see what happends.
I haven't tried MP yet.

It will be the game. It was the same on F1 2010 for me. Struggling on low/medium applied patch 1.01 can have a mix of high/ultra (shadows low) even some AA now get 30-40 FPS
