    Hello,

Firstly an apology - I have used this site and forum as a point of reference for years, but never had the decency to register until now. I apologise for not joining your fair group sooner. Now I am registered I will endeavour to assist others as they will hopefully assist me.

Secondly, my question, if you would be so good as to help me out. I have an M11X R3 i7 which was pretty much top spec when I bought it in November 2011 with the exception of an SSD drive. I see on eBay they are still selling for good money, probably due to them being discontinued.

Is now the best time to sell whilst we still await news of the future of Alienware Netbooks? I eventually want an M14x, but am willing to wait so long as I don't lose a heap of money for doing so.

    Thanks for your help.
    Rob

Really not sure, but considering amazon is pushing them for 1100£, compared to 800£ on release day, i would think now would be the best time to sell and buy an m14x. Besides there aren't that many for sale, rarely see any R3's on ebay even.

Surely they should release a new m11x, after new CPUs from intel pop out, would be a shame if they don't... I am sure a lot of people would miss it, though for dell it probably makes sense to move workforce from m11x to tablets and ultra portables as that seems to be what people want...

Well that's awesome - thank you for your response. Amazing to think my M11X R3 will sell for pretty much what I paid for it!

    All the best

I think this is the best time to sell them to get good money and upgrade to a better one. They are pretty expensive on the net :)

do you guys think those prices are realistic? who ever is buying an m11x from amazon for £1000 must be crazy! also most of them seem to have terrible reviews. I dont know if its a case that many of those laptops have indeed had their GPUs replaced or those people simply dont know how to use OPTIMUS tech....but still...

I just had a look on ebay and most m11x's seem to be going in the 300-400£ region with an m11xr3 going for ~500-600£.

Im in a similar situation...trying to decide what to do...

my m11xr2 recently died (corrupt hdd, couldnt even restore to factory settings) and i got for it a 128gb SSD - 80£ (as well as waiting on a delivery of 8gb corsair ram - £37) and thinking of buying a new battery (45£)...

ive always liked the idea of mobile gaming so the Clevo W110ER appeals to me...but to be honest i dont actually do much gaming :D was tempted for a long time by the Toshiba u840w (found one for £650 with W7) however currently thinking ill just go ahead and buy the new battery and hold off on a new laptop till i see what the next generation brings...i could prob get away with selling it to a friend for £250-300 but not sure id like the Clevo as much :-/ not a good looking laptop at all!

perhaps might buy a desktop when i finally get round to moving into a new apartment....eeek...if theres one thing i love spending my money on its laptops lol.

shame the R3 motherboards are so expensive on ebay :(

Made the switch to the G46VW, the wife now has the M11x R3 and is very happy with it, even tho it pretty much sits by the couch in its case.

Have swapped out the i5 3210M for an i7 3610QM as well as adding a 256gb mSATA, soon will be looking to replace the stock HDD with a Crucial M500 once the prices stabilise a bit :)

My fiance is looking at getting one of these as her school laptop. One on Ebay with 4 months of warranty left for $685, so we would be willing to go for that price point or less.

Well, chances are the longer you wait the less it will be worth. Unless a lot of people start buying it as a "collector's item" in a few years.

If you're feeling greedy and want to make some cash, they usually go for at least 700 dollars on ebay for the lower end of the spectrum. The more robust hardware configurations of the R3 are often 800+. I got mine (8GB RAM, 500 HDD, i7) for 600 dollars. Though, my case is probably quite rare, as it was being sold by an older guy with a stable job and a computer hobby who didn't need the M11x any more, and thus had little incentive to sell at a really high price to turn a profit.

In the end, it really depends on why you are selling. If you're just too cluttered with laptops, do something nice for someone and give them a good deal. If it's for profit, well, go make a profit. It's up to you.

The G46VW presumably doesn't have its processor permanently soldered to the main board.

You can go to the NBR marketplace and search the Laptops and Desktops for sale subsection. There may or may not be what you're looking for on sale. Your other option is ebay or a similar retailer.

You need to reread his post . He swapped a i5 for a i7 in a MX11. Those chips I'm pretty sure are BGA's which take some very expensive equipment to change out. I have 2 of those pieces of equipment in my department at work which are 100k each. It can be done cheaper just wondering how he did it ?

I too was very interesed in g46vw until I saw the teardown guide for that model.
Btw I'm surprised how much m11xs are still going for. I sold my r1 for like 300 dollars last year lol.

As long as I can remember there are a few computer brands that will always fetch a better price then other systems, Alienware is one of those brands.

    This is his post:

The CPU swap could refer to either machine, and considering that swapping processors on the M11x is pretty much rocket surgery requiring hundred thousand dollar equipment, it is reasonable to assume that the CPU was exchanged on the Asus as opposed to the AW.

Also, this is what he has in his forum signature:

As such, this means that the hardware upgrades mentioned in his earlier post were referring to his G46VW as opposed to his M11x.
