what are some really good games that are worth playing during a flight? Mass effect 2 to consuming plus i don't think there are power points on planes anyway.

L4D is always fun, I personally do racing games that I can just use the keyboard keys because the tray tables are so small I cant fit a mouse on there with the laptop.

    cool.

i had a look at the planes i'll be taking and they have 110v power points (my assumption is that it will be for US/Canada plugs) which i can solve with a plug adaptor. that was my greatest concern is battery life of course.

Double check the plugs, it might be the round airplane ports. Search google for airplane power plug

    aircanada.com - Our Fleet - Boeing 777-200LR (77L)

that means no special airplane connector is needed so the only adapter i need is one that converts Australia to US/Canada.

For me it depends on the flight length and the space on the tray. If I can squeeze a mouse in there and it's a relatively short flight I always go for a light RPG. Freedom Force, Torchlight etc. If there's no room for a mouse Magic The Gathering: DOTPW.

If it's a long flight and I have no extra power I just watch movies with VLC and the screen set all the way down. Or read my kindle. :)

I've said it before, so those of you that have seen it forgive the broken record.

The answer to original question is classics. Hit up GOG.com and download some deep classic games like Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment and so on ., You can play these in power save mode (I do every night) and on the integrated graphcis card and get far more battery life than with anything more modern. Old doesn't mean bad :)

Play a flight simulator, use a plane that is the same model as the one you are on, and repeatedly crash it into the ground.

After you've scared all the people next to you, an emulator with an XBOX 360 controller can occupy your time nicely. The controller lets you play like on a console (and it doesn't require tray space like a mouse does) and you can probably run the emulator with integrated graphics to save power.

Considering airplane sits/space just keeps getting smaller(to be fair, so are the prices), I rarely ever pull my notebook during normal dosmestic flights(the ones that only have 1 class), only on longer flights when I'm flying on business class.

Half-Life, Half-Life: Opposing Force and Half-Life: Blue Shift. All run perfectly on integrated graphics and will keep you busy for a long time.

Also X-Com: UFO Defense and Terror From The Deep are AWESOME games for long trips. Very in-depth turn based strategy games that run on integrated.
