I'm dual booting Backtrack 4 and Windows 7 on my M11xR2 but when i update the video card in Backtrack, i get an error no screens found, and even when i use fixvesa and change the xconfig file back to normal it doesn't work. I have used two methods of updating the backtrack auto update method and the actual driver i downloaded from the site, both ended with same results. I have also altered the xconfig file quite some bit to try to get it to work but still to no avail. It says video device isn't found err ("No Devices Detected") but that makes no sense because before installing the driver everything loads fine but obviously with no graphic driver and in low resolution. I've been looking everywhere to solve this and have tried a lot of things i was just curious if maybe there is an older driver that someone used that they know works for sure or not. Or if anyone knows the solution to this, thank you in advance I'm not to much of a noob so feel free to give complicated advice if you think it'll work :)

I can't help you with the video, but was just wondering if you managed to get the DW1520 to work in BackTrack, as I could not... Also what do you need the video for anyway??

Ugh, well just wanted the video to make it more function not to mention there are threading applications to stack processing capabilities, but really just wanted it to make Backtrack a more comfortable environment and to speed up the window movement etc, if you used it you'll notice its like running windows without the video drivers installed. As far as the DW1520 i managed to successful utilize monitor mode and access the internet but as far as injecting goes, I'm pretty sure its not supported yet but will be shortly from what I've seen. If you want me to give you links to keep watch on for the support of that let me know I'll find them for you again as that isn't my issue at the moment i just want it fully capable of everything and running ugh stupid nvidia slowing me down haha

Yeah I guess you are right!! Optimus is pretty annoying from a linux standpoint. Even if just the Intel HD could be used it would be greay. Oh yeah that would be great, as I would really like to be able to use it when the drivers come out :D

Yes, you can go full res and full animation. However, I haven't found a solution to allow Backtrack to access the cuda cores- so that might be an advantage for dual booting.

On my R1 which is less juicy, the estimate goes to around 2-3 hours normally, mainly because the Nvidia won't power down.

Ok. There's no way to disable the Nvidia ? Hack the bios or whatever.

I saw on a review that, on the R3, we can have 10-12 hours of battery life on Windows (Optimus).

So if there's any chance to disable the NVidia on Backtrack, I pick up the phone immediatly to buy this wonderfull machine.

PS: I'm french so would you please excuse me if my sentences are incorrect or incomprehensible.

I have an Alienware M11xR3... I also tried to install the nvidia drivers on my computer (running backtrack 5)

I install the drivers, then I startx and I get the no screens found error. fixvesa does not work..

    Not sure what to do?

Backtrack 5 R1 boots fine from USB on my R2 i5.
The GPU is always on, but this is easily fixed with Bumblebee.

To get the wireless card working you need to download and install the compat-wireless drivers.
Download the bleeding edge drivers to your root folder, then paste the code below into a Terminal window.

    Code:
    prepare-kernel-sources

    cd /usr/src/linux

    cp -rf include/generated/* include/linux/

    cd ~

    tar jxvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2

    cd compat-wireless-2011-12-18

    ./scripts/driver-select b43

    make

    sudo make install

    sudo make unload

    modprobe b43

    modprobe atl1

    modprobe atl1c
If you have a R3 with Killer Wireless N 1103 then replace "b43" with "ath9k".
You will probably have to change "compat-wireless-2011-12-18".

Linux runs really well on this beast!
