    Autodesk 3ds Max

    I have the m11x in my sig.... should it be able to run this smoothly? I plan to be doing extremely heavy 3d modeling for a robotics club and competition.

    It has issues with rotation in DirectX mode even with low poly models. You can turn the model slowly, but if you do it at normal speeds, it jumps around. It gets even worse if you use an external monitor.

    I showed this to a Nvidia representative and after checking my settings, he agreed and said the issue was that it was a mainstream card. So they don't optimize as much for 3d programs. I pointed out most game developers work on commercial hardware versus high end to match the end user. He was supposedly going to try to bring it up with the engineers about getting into future drivers.

    This was with a r2 and r3. With Max 2011 and 2012.

    So to reiterate. Its not the hardware, the nvidia cards are capable of full DX shader support (and I use). Its simply a driver issue that may or may never get fixed. FWIW, if you work in OpenGL, it shows none of those symptoms. IF your doing it for a robotics club, I would assume you have no need of shaders, so using the OpenGL mode is fine. I however work with realtime shaders when I texture, so I do DX mode. Also Nitrous viewports work fine in 2012, but that mode does not support shaders. 2012 has other issues as well, as it will not weld mirrored UVs in example (again probably not an issue for your need).
