Like many of you, I purchased the m11x before the update; however, out of curiosity, would it be a sensible solution to switch out the old motherboard for the new, or just a waste of money? What would you recommend? Thanks guys/gals.

I seriously doubt that'll be possible, the connections will probably be slightly different/modified casing. It is a waste of money even if it would be possible as the current m11x already performs very well for what it is. I cant see an i series CPU making that much of a gaming performance increase.

I don't think Dell will even consider letting you do that if it were possible.

Does one know at this time what one would be swapping?
Maybe wait a month until a refresh is released and then one can make a valued judgment on known specifications.
One may be better off selling an existing M11x and buying a new refreshed model.
As for me I have a lovely OC'd M11x with hinges and build quality other M11x owners would die for. (well as least sustain a paper cut for.)

I don't think that Dell will go out of their way to make the motherboard incompatible with their other designs. I'm pretty sure the motherboard is a custom unit, and not some off the shelf design. And did I mention it takes forever to take the machine apart for the first time?

And if it was offered for sale, it would probably be half the price of the machine.

I think it will have the same sizes, a new design revision could take alot of money and time. Also think about this...

One guy buys an m11x at lauch, he plays with it he loves it and after 6 months (about 2 months after the refresh) his m11x burns or gets bricked, since all the r1 models are sold out and intel no longer makes ULV core 2 duos and the refurbished r1 motherboards are out of stock Dell must replace the unit, dealing with high costs because of that...

Thats why I think the new motherboard will fit on the older one, maybe the fan/heatsink is different but it still fits the older case, Dell would save much $$$$.

Given the price, you'd probably be better off selling your R1 and paying the difference out of pocket for an R2

It wouldn't surprise me to see the motherboard cost $500 or some price for it.

Are there any users out there planning out selling their R1 and paying the difference? Is it worth it in your opinion?

considering how nobody knows how they perform, i'll default to "it's not worth it".

it'll only be worth it if there is a significant performance increase. if it's only minor, not worth it, unless yours breaks and dell gives you a new one...

yeah... last two times I priced out a new mobo for laptops they were around $600-$800... your best bet is usually to sell your R1 and buy the R2 with the proceeds

When I bought my M11x I knew there was a chance of the refresh. The wife enjoys the M11x so much I will give her mine when the new one comes out. Win Win situation.

I offer $300 for it if you can prove it's brand new and functioning or at least prove that it has the warranty.

If you are serious about selling your m11x, I'm more than willing to talk with you about it because as long as it's in good working condition, then I'm very interested. If you want, you can just email me at [email protected]

I had a base model m11x r1 version and when i 3 months ago got a m11x r3 version with 6gb Ram, i5 processor and 500gb hard drive and nvidia 540m for 800 pound saving quite a bit.
The difference in gaming is quite big but i never overclocked my r1 but the downside is that the r3 is louder but i'm now used to the noise and use headphones anyway still love my m11x gaming on the move
