    I just got a alienware m11x r2 but i notice in the boot options it only says network or hard drive...is there any way to boot from usb or a external cd/dvd?

    When you hit F12 at boot the option for cd/dvd drive will appear once you have a cd/dvd drive connected. I do not know if this is the same for usb. Give it a try and see.

    to boot from USB/external HDD, you'll have to enable 'USB' emulation in bios and then connect plug the device(s) to USB port. You should be able to set it in boot order in BIOS after that.
