So last week i ordered my m11x laptop. I wanted to upgrade it to 8GB of ram so today i went out and bought some. Unfortunatly my laptop isnt here yet and im not sure as to whether or not the type of ram i bought will work. its a DDR3 8GB PC8500 Dual So-, by Patriot Memory. If you could help me out and let me know if this will work with the m11x that would be much appriciated.

As long as it says somewhere on the case that it's laptop memory then it is. I'm pretty sure it is. Although I hope you didn't pay $150 for it either as you can get 8 GBs from here...

    Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model F3-8500CL7D-8GBSQ

That's perfect. Works well, good reviews, and has been recommended around here. It's $85.

to add to his question, does the latency or any of that matter? can you put a 1066mhz ram into a board that runs at 800mhz and not lose anything? or is it actually counter productive to do so? (battery life and performance)

You won't lose anything but obviously you're not utilizing it all. Don't get anything more than 1066mhz. It's not counter productive to performance or battery life.

You can obviously get 1333 and above SO-DIMMs as well, and they will work, but since the highest you can run the RAM OC'd is 1000, then 1066 RAM will be sufficient. Add to that the timings in slower RAM are more aggressive, so in actual fact, the 1066 RAM @ cas 7 you bought will perform better at 800-1000mhz than if you had bought 1333 RAM @ cas 9.

Technically it is slower but you would be hard pressed to notice the difference outside of synthetic benchmarks.
