I've plugged my M11x into a receiver before using HDMI. It works just fine.

If you wanted to plug 5.1 speakers into your M11x, then there are the audio ports on the side specifically for that. It will work fine.

The Mic plug is a multi-purpose plug for either mic input, line-in input, or rear speaker output.

When you plug something in to that jack, you should receive a pop-up either alerting you that something has been plugged in, or it will pop up a configuration diagram. In either case, you will be given the option for how you want the audio jacks on your machine to be configured. This will appear, as long as you are running the RealTek audio manager software that comes pre-loaded on your machine.

    You're welcome.

You can easily see the pop-up configuration by plugging anything into the "Mic" port of your laptop. Hopefully, that will give you a good idea of what that whole configuration screen looks like.

So let's say if I were to buy the Roccat Kave, I wouldn't be able to use the Mic and 5.1 at the same time right?

That is correct, since those headphones require 4x 3.5mm jacks to properly output the 5-channel surround sound plus have an input for the microphone.

But even if it could, I would strongly argue that you wouldn't want those anyway. I can go into why with more detail if you want, but I strongly believe that you are much better off with high-quality headphones or a headset that outputs 2-channel stereo. Surround sound on headphones is a gimmick.

For around 100usd? Audio Technica AD700/A700/M50 <--mostly based off of what little I know. Headfi is the more detailed destination for questions like these.

The unit reviews well, but the people doing the reviews don't have a lot of experience reviewing audio equipment.

What would I recommend? If you want full-sized headphones, you really couldn't go wrong with an Audio Technica ATH-A700 that jeremyshaw recommended, or the Sennheiser HD555's. If you want a microphone, add on a Zalman ZM-1 mic. I personally use a pair of Audio Technica ATH-A900's (one step up from the A700's) + Zalman ZM-1 mic, and it's a fantastic combo. If you want a headset that already has a mic on it, then you could look into the Sennheiser PC350 headset, which is fantastic.

Would you consider something portable for your laptop, instead of full-sized headphones?

I use the Turtle Beach HPA-2's and they sound amazing great directionality, Not all of them are a gimmick, and This headset does get it right. I bet you have never used a pair of these either from my experience it is usually the people that say these headphones are a gimmick have never used/owned a pair and usually go off what others write on forums. I have a set of HD555's and they are great headphones but I can definitely tell the difference in directionality on these more than the 555's Gaming Headset Buyer's Guide & Roundup - HotHardware

In all fairness, I was coming at the problem from a perspective of sound quality. Surround headsets emphasize surround sound more than sound quality or clarity. To me, I get a much more immersive experience with high sound quality + software surround support, than I do with hardware surround "headphones". Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I would like something more portable but I can't stand on-ear headphones and I definitely need a mic. I was also just thinking of getting earphones for real portability but I have not found one that really feel nice.
