    Hello !

I'd like to know if anybody here upgraded an M11X R1 from 4GB to 8GB ?

    Two questions :

    - This computer is bottleneck by CPU , will i gain anything in FPS by adding ram ?

    - The Ram is bottleneck by CPU , what ram should i buy ? Cause it seem that M11XR1 CPU is lowering ram values ... no ? I mean i'm not at Mhrtz maximum right ?

Thank you :) ( i'd like to improve FPS on games on my R1 , and i'm was asking also if an SSD or RAM upgrade could do it ... but the SSD won't allow me to use Ubuntu ( no disk space until spending 400€+ ) and have great battery for school )

Don't bother with the RAM upgrade, R1 suffers from CPU bottlenecking. Look at the PIN mod's if you are feeling brave.

SSD is a good upgrade though ;) Won't improve your FPS but makes up for the lack of CPU speed in Windows.

Ok thanks for your fast answer ! Pinmod scares me a bit ( i read a few people who destroy they motherboard ) , and it's still under warranty , i don't want to break this.

SSD is still cool upgrade , but EVERY single people that i know in real life who bought SSD RMA'd them at least twice , especially with OCZ ones :( Don't want to loose randomly all my school lessons because of SSD failing or else.

    Yes, lots of people.

No. If you are using your laptop for gaming, then you will not even be using 4GB of RAM in your system. Upgrading to 8GB will not affect your gaming performance in any way.

Doesn't matter what RAM you buy. Buy whatever is cheapest.

The DDR3 RAM that you can buy will be **rated** to run at either 1066MHz or 1333Mhz. Your laptop will actually run that RAM at 800Mhz. It does not matter what kind of RAM you buy.

RAM upgrade will not help you get better FPS in games. SSD will not help you get better FPS in games. The only real way to improve FPS in games is to get a more powerful GPU. And unfortunately, for most laptops out there (including the Alienware M11x), the GPU is not ugpradeable. The only way to get a more powerful GPU is to buy a new laptop.

Ok , thanks for your answer !

I should consider selling it and buy an R2 or R3 ...

Just one question : Why did you bother upgrading from 4 to 8 so ? I mean , i read several people did it , but for what ? Creating a ramdisk ? You're all editing video ?

    Just wondering :)

I upgraded my RAM because the RAM i received from dell was a little faulty and wouldn't let me overclock to the laptops fullest potential. So i figured if I was changing RAM, may as well just put 8 gigs in and call it good.

    1) Going from an Alienware M11x R1 --> R3 will give you a marginal bump in performance... about 30% - 35% better framerates. Whether this is worth it or not is up to you. If you want more performance than that, you'll need to start looking at larger laptops, like an Alienware M14x.

    2) Some people upgrade from 4GB --> 8GB of RAM because they are doing other things with their laptop besides just running games. Some people run applications that use a lot of RAM (like databases, virtual machines, video editing) that use a lot of RAM.

But most people that upgraded to 8GB did it just because they like the warm-and-fuzzy feeling of knowing that they have "the best", even if there is no practical benefit to them. That is worth the money for some people.

I'm that kind of people , but i'd rather have something usefull.

35% better framerate for me is huge, but will some games still run at a decent frame rate like crysis 2 on the R3 ? I manage to have it run on the M11X , but it's not really enjoyable. Black ops is even worse and feel ugly. And the game for what i bought the M11X ( League of legends ) is running crappy since last update ... ( 60 FPS at the begining on medium settings - 45 when creep inc - 25 during teamfight ... i'm use to 60 FPS all the time on my desktop , and it bother me )

I was also thinking about buying an Asus G , a friend of mine just buy one of them for a very decent price ( 750 € , consider i could probably sell my M11X here for 600 ) , and can run games like BFBC2 everything on high at 60FPS all the time. But this laptop is becoming so hot so quick ... Not really like alienware products :/

Bought the M11X for school typing , now that i have an iPad 2 with it's awesome battery life , i may should buy a bigger computer , you're right ! Tx !

It sounds like the kind of gaming power and usage (lots of typing) would really point you towards buying a larger laptop... something that is at least 14".

It's been answered but another vote for no unless you are into programming, design, or photo/video editing... or using MANY applications at once.

If it's purely for gaming 8GB of RAM won't be needed for several years. By that point the CPU and GPU will be outdated and you'll need a new laptop.

If you want more FPS PinMod or OC your GPU with software. going from 4gb to 8gb wont help and would be a waste.

I upgraded to 8gb cuz mine only came with 2gb and needed more RAM. At the time i was ordering more the 8gb set was super cheap and i think only cost me $10 more than the cheapest 4gb set i could find on newegg. but if you already have 4gb i would just stick with that.

Ok ! I already overclocked my GPU with EVGA precision , not pushing it to it's limit , i win about 400-500 points on 3Dmark , but it just seems like in game , no change. Runs that use to run well still run well , games that run like crap still run like crap, and game that were like MW2 , great FPS but slowdown to 45 when in smoke or else still had the same.

Just to throw this out there, I literally just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of RAM today. I did it because my r1 won't overclock without a blue screen and I was hoping that by getting new RAM it would overclock and I was able to get 8GB cheap on Newegg. Nope, still won't overclock. Whatever, I may actually be doing video editing on this laptop in the near future, so it may not be a total waste.
