I was in the middle of gaming when I heard that windows sound that means you've disconnected something... like when you pull our a mouse or a USB drive. I ignored it but when I tried to video chat with a friend it didnt detect a webcam. I looked under my device manager and under imaging devices something called facap fastaccess video capture was disabled. I enabled it but when I tried to use the webcam I got a image that looked like the picture below. Then when I tried to uninstall the webcam and search for new hardware windows no longer recognizes any webcam. It cant find any webcam on my computer now. Anyone have any tips?

Sounds like you might have gotten unlucky with a loose cable. Webcam failures are pretty uncommon. Can you try to download the driver from support.dell.com and if this doesn't work, please call support and they'll replace your LCD assembly to resolve.

Thanks and sorry for the troubles!

huh?! I just removed the anti glare screen protector because my LCD was going to get replaced and my webcam started working!?!?! Could it be that there was some sort of static electricity problem that was screwing with the webcam?

Very interesting. I wouldn't throw away the idea, but makes me wonder what possibly else it could be.

I'm still thinking loose cable - let me know what happens over the next several days.

Should I still get it replaced just in case? I also have a few dust specs under the screen. The alienware support guy said that a tech would call me tomorrow to make an appointment and that he should recieve the parts tomorrow. My fear of him replacing the LCD is that he wont do it properly or mess other things... best not to touch something that is perfectly working. Should I just replace it?

Just watch him while he does it, or if you are computer savvy do it yourself. I have done that before, just tell the tech to sit on the couch while I get'er done.

I work with Dell contracted on-site technicians frequently and it's very hit or miss as to the quality of service you get. Sorry to hear about the screw up.
