Hi. I got my son an Alienware X51 r1 a month ago and the traded the GTX 660 for a HD R9 285. Most of the time the PC runs fine (fan on full during games) but every so often the PC crashes. Would it be ok to slightly UNDER-CLOCK the gpu??? Or should I try something else?
Thanks for any help.

Funny, I have an R9 285 (from VisionTek) in my X51 too. The only difference is that the room where my X51 is, it is kept cool (72 to 74 F; about 22 to 23 C), so it doesn't get too hot (at least for now).
You could undervolt the GPU and might want to underclock the GPU as well. Or make the room the X51 is somewhat chilly. But before this, I would remove the side panel first. And if that doesn't fix the problem, maybe take out the DVD drive and its caddy holder-thing.Last edited: Jun 20, 2015 -
Thanks. I've taken out the DVD drive. I'll see if that helps.
Thanks -
It's still crashing. But not as much. Is it worth de-clocking the GPU? Or shall I try something else?

You have taken out the side panel and left it off, yes?
Which R9 285 do you have? You can downlock to stock clocks if yours is factory overclocked. -
Hi. My son has XFX black edition. I don't really want to leave cover off as its my 10 year old son. Maybe I could as a tryout if I stay with him.

Is the black edition ok?

It's fine, but if that's your R9 285, then I would downclock back to stock clocks. In the Catalyst Control Center, there's a section called "PowerTune" or something like that. It allows you to modify the clocks. The core clock will need a change of about 5.8%. You can lower the Power TDP by about 1 to 3%, if desired.

Hi. Yes it's the XFX R9 285 black. I'll downclock it. Thanks for your help.

Oops, forgot to mention, but the numbers I said are supposed to be negative, not positive.

Yeah. Thanks. I'll try it tomorrow. Cheers.
