I am looking to finally upgrade my HD in my M17 and I want to get a nice fast SSD. My budget is around $150-175. I have been doing a bit of research and from what I have seen, it seems that this one is the best bang for the buck. Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Now are there some other options out there that you guys would recommend over this? I am new to the SSD market and don't know much about them. Is there some new tech coming out in the near future that I would be better off waiting for? Thanks!

SSD's are plenty fast and if you are planning to simply load the SSD with your OS and have your conventional HDD for storage and programs I wouldn't be too concerned in the speed it will be quite peppy. I would consider the 60Gb to bit a bit small and would encourage you to look for a 100 or 128Gb for your SSD. I had a 128GGb SSD in my M17x and picked up a 160 Intel for the M17x and a Patriot 256Gb for the Studio 435T/9000 PC, the 128 is in the 160's box as backup but will probably never get used.

The Vertex 2 is considered to be one of the fastest drives out there. But to be honest, most people won't notice the difference in real-world performance of SSD's, as long as you are past a certain minimum level of performance. I am a believer in that. And because of that, I would not consider the Vertex 2 to be a "good buy." It is really intended for people who want the absolute fastest drive they can buy, with money as no object.

If you're looking for best value in a fast drive, I would recommend you look into the OCZ Vertex 1 120GB. It's selling for $260 after rebate at NewEgg. It's a little bit more expensive than the 60GB versions of the Vertex 1 or Vertex 2, but will give you a lot more breathing room to store your stuff. And coming from a mechanical hard drive, you will not be able to tell the difference between a Vertex 1 or Vertex 2 in real-world performance.

    +1

you would be surprised how fast you will fill up a 120 GB drive

so get one as big as you can afford.

so if you can do so get the 120 GB

Dell recommends 256, I agree. Don't get sucked into paying mucho dollars for an SSD that will last 1,000,000 million hours or 100 years when it only takes 1 day to fill up with games :) I imagine 100 years from now they will quite cheap. ;)

Yeah, I have a 500GB alternative storage that I will use for all my files. I just need a SSD big enough for the OS and maybe 1 or 2 games.

I have an 80GB Intel SSD with Win 7, Photoshop Elements and two games on it and I have 23 GB to spare. That is good enough for me. The two games are CoDMW2 and FEAR 2.

I got an Intel drive because they come with good SSD management software to keep the drive from bogging down and getting slower. However, with Win 7, that might be unnecessary because Win 7 knows how to manage an SSD.
