So I get a LOT of PM's from you guys asking if I have any mxm cards for sale. Since I am on ebay a lot I figured I would start a thread where if I or anyone else find a hard to find card that may be compatible with our laptops I would post it in one spot to give everyone else a heads up. Please keep this to rare cards and not ones like the 3870's you see all over ebay.

Not sure if this is against forum rules as I am NOT the seller of any cards posted so this is not an advertisement, but this seemed like a great way to help the community keep these laptops alive.

To start things off a 4870:

ATI AMD 4870 Laptop Video Card MXM 2 1 III for Asus MSI Alienware Like GTX 280M | eBay

Claims to work with the m17, perhaps it would work with others if someone was brave enough to flash with the VBIOS from my "red card" 4850. At the price it would probably be best to just put it in a m17.

Probably but if people scroll to the bottom they may find something good. Also the link you posted is to a card w/ a price of over $1,000

It's not a buyout, but best offer. I don't know for what price they are willing to sell, but paying anything more than 200$ for a card is an overkill.

You said "Price: ~180$" which is why I was shocked to see it listed for over $1000

New for Acer Aspire as 8730G 8730 MXM II 4670 512MB VGA Video Card Tested | eBay

Today we have the very rare DDR3 4670. There are plenty of 1GB DDR2 4670's out there but the MSI 4670 used DDR3 memory and though it was only a 512MB Type II card it rivaled the performance of the Type III 3870.

I am not sure anyone has tried the MSI version in their alienware's but the price does not seem bad if it does work. MSI seems to be the only one who made this version but there are some posters claiming it works in their Acer. The seller lists it for Acer laptops but probably doesn't know a lot about the card. I matched it up to an image a guy posted in 2009 when he got it working in his Acer and this listing seems legit.

I think I'll actually go for ATI HD 4870 and see how it works. Expensive test, but I hope everything will work. The only thing that worries me is how it will support GPU switching and if ASUS have not flashed card with property BIOS so it works only on ASUS laptops.

Btw, HD4850 is exactly as HD4870 just with lower clocks.

Testing had been done on the W90 4870 in an m15x. It's been said to not work by user benfclark if i remember correctly. But it's never been tested with the any other vbios as far as I know.

So it does not work in m15x. Sad. Nevertheless I reanimated my GTX 260M so I'll stick to it for now.

One time I tried the green pcb 4870 for the M17 in a m15x and it's vbios was not compatible. Was hoping yours would be different. You could blind flash the vbios from my red pcb 4850 though you risk bricking your card.

This is a VERY odd listing indeed. Doing a bit of research the Lenovo Y710 was a 2008 laptop which would make sense having the mxm type II socket. Also to my knowledge no MXM 2.1 cards were made after the 4870 / GTX 280. They switched to MXM A & B by then.

The ideapad originally came with a low performing 512MB HD2600. Googling that card I found this link. The pictures look the exact same as the "6740m" the seller listed.

My conclusion is that the seller listed the wrong model card and if purchases you will probably just be overpaying $112 for an old HD 2600.

The auctions looks very convincing. Seller has 3.7k reps with 98% positives, but anyone can make mistake, right. I looked closer to the board ID and in that blurry picture you can barely see 55.4X003.001G which is the same number as on the HD2600. So much for the hype :/

I asked seller a question about this, we will see what he will answer.

    edit: his answer:
    "Hi
The pictures are attached, the numbers on the card is what I used to get the info.
    Regards"

    Now I see.

If anything a M17 would probably be compatible. I doubt any other Alienware would be.

Here is an interesting one, the MXM Type III 3850. From reading it seems to be a major step down from a 3870 based on benchmarks, but better than some of the cards in the older Alienware's. I have only ever seen one other 3850 so I don't have much info to verify this card is what it says it is. I don't think people have really experimented with this one so buy at your own risk.

I can't believe this is not compatible with m15x :(
Did anyone make a research about different PCB colour? Would be interesting to know why it's incompatible.

I was the one who did the original test and I never tested a green 4850 in a m15x, I tested a really rare green pcb 4870 and that did not work. Perhaps the 4850 green pcb bios would be different.

I see that there are still people who want find those cards. I have few (I assume brand new, still even sealed) slave 4870m green pcb. If I remember correctly flashing them to master vbios made them working. So far I tried one in m5550i, in some acer and msi and they were working. At least showing the picture on internal or external screen. I didn't try them in the system with drivers, thought. If their is interest in them I could put them on the market here. By the way I'm from UK then no tax for EU. I need to sort out my mxm cards. I still have few green 4870m, msi 4850m, 3870m, 4670m msi ddr3, some 230m from toshiba. Damm I need to kick myself in the butt and start the projects what I have in mind. So many plans and so little strong will.

If it's not a pain, and GPUZ screens or device manager screens showing the green 4870 running in the m5550i? I only ask because my m5750 uses the same motherboard and I was not able to get a greeen pcb 4870 to work, only a red pcb 4850. If yours does indeed work then that opens up new possibilities for these owners and perhaps the card I tried 2 years back was just faulty.

If you can get some pics of the cards for sale too that would be great.

I would be very happy to have a working 4870 in my m15x

    P.S. I'm from France, I should pay 90$ tax for that card + 40$ delivery + 399$ card = 530$ for a used GPU, no thanks.

    Here You have:
    Alienware m5500i 4850m.JPG
Laptop have bios 2.03. I didn't try yet other ones to check if they play role in proper detecting the card. This bios have tragic fan control. Firs gear kick on about 55 deg and second around 70. Card is hot as hell. The heat is kind of trapped in the vga heatsink plate. Coils and mosfets on the card are very hot as well. And I notice very strange throttling once when I stressed card with the furmark. Cpu was throttled to the insanely low frequencies like 400 or even 200MHz. That's why I newer saw more then 75W power draw from the wall, even with orthos and furmark together. But I couldn't repeat that later or just software didn't show that. This laptop is very tough to work with. No overclocking through software altering PLL because it turns out clock gen smbus is not connected with southbridge like in almost every other laptop but with EC which is apparently controlling it registers and changing dynamically frequency depend from, i don't know, whatever is written in the EC. That's my theory. And there's so called "dynamic power" system which change VIDs to, which is controlled, yes You have guess, by the EC. I envy You protivakid having so much space in m5750. With that empty space I could properly cool graphic card by eg. even adding extra heatsink with heatpipes and fan. With m5550 it's hard as hell to make any improvements with cooling without serious mods.

Did you see the link in my signature? I didn't add a heatsink but I did add a fan to blow on the card. I also modded my stock fan to run at 100% since it didn't respond to my 4850's temps.

From my thread I was comparing my CPUZ with yours. The subvendor is different which I expected given you have a green pcb & mine is red. Also very odd that my default memory clocks are 50MHz faster than yours and my Bandwidth is a bit higher than yours. Everything else from mine matches. I attached my screenshot below for reference.

Would you be able to extract and share the VBios of your card either using GPUZ or Radeon Bios Editor? This would help as now there are two confirmed working VBios that work with the Uniwell based Alienware models for the 4850. Does your v2.03 bios allow 4GB of ram like the v1.19? Also would we be able to get a pic of your card? :)

    Thanks in advance!

Also did you have any problems with the power draw with the 4850 in your m5550? In my m5750 the card was maxing out the 120W power supply when I metered it so I had to upgrade to a 230W

I have a MSI GX720 I am willing to sell as a complete unit, has a Core 2 Quad Q9100 sample chip w/unlocked multipliers and has a nvidia 9600M GT GDDR3 (NOT DDR2 version) MXM 2.1 card. Don't know if anybody is interested, but seems most if not all the ebay versions are the ddr2 versions.
