I just got my m17X R1 area 51 back from repair. I installed hwinfo32 and have been monitoring temps on cpu and gpu's. The cpu (T9500 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo) peaked at 73C (both cores did) during the stability test in Prime95 for 20minutes.
HOWEVER... the gpu's only made it two minutes before they were reaching 103C (both 9800GT's in SLI) so I stopped the test. I ran Crysis on high settings and they topped out this last time at 102C. Simply surfing the net and I get 80C.
The reason this laptop went in for repair started with heat in the gpu's then the mobo went, etc. I emailed my rep at AW and got no response yet. :(

Anyone know the proper temps for idle and peak load?
I will run Furmark for 10min and see what happens as soon as the rep emails me. I want him aware of what's happening before I take the chance of ruining everything in it from the heat.

That's definetely too hot. Plus, the 9800GTs are a ticking time bomb destined to burn out anyway. It'll burn out even faster if it runs that hot though.

Ideally they should be peaking at 80C, to stay 'safe' they should never hit 90C (and even that is dangerous with 9800GTs.)

In all honesty, no matter how cool you get them those GPUs WILL burn out again, given time.

I think it could be very possible that the Area 51 m15x could take a single 3870, provided it has BIOS support for it. However it'd be a LOT slower than SLi 9800GTs, and I highly doubt that the machine would support crossfire 3870s.

Still, not sure if anyone's tried it. It might work.

if there is bios suport for using an ati and the thing can fit them and power them both then there is no trouble cause on ati's side there is no need for a special chip in the chipset to make a CFX on the contrary on Nvidia

Thx for the replies. I tried Furmark stability test and at 127seconds they had topped at 106C. HOT
I stopped the test and emailed my rep the screen shot.
They owe me equal or better so we will see what he says. I recently had EVERYTHING replaced or so he said. Barebones, case, lcd, cpu, memory, etc.
I kind of figured 80C was awfully hot for a few IE windows open. Worse is the temps at peak.
I just needed to know what the temps 'should' be. :)

The temps should be under full load topping out at no higher than 90 preferably 85.

The CPU is cool enough.... however your GPU should not reach over 100... thats insane man.... try reapplying thermal paste and make sure u clean the chip surface nicely using thermal paste cleaner b4 applying new one....

I finally got a reply this morning about the peak load temps and you guys were right. The engineers at Alienware said... 90-92C are the threshold temp and peak load should be around 80C.
Thx again everyone for the answers. :)

omg, my idle temp for my GPU is 68c..... man, is that too high ? I redid thermal paste and seems like its not helping.

for a single one it's wierd but if your thermal paste has a time befor it get to full power it's normal (with back cover and ant dust crap of course)

Repaste again. Apply a thin layer. 68C idle is crazy.

no it's not insane in the m17 how ever it might be saying that you put to much paste or did not spreaded it correctly or that your fans are full of dust

what where you temps befor? and above all it's your under loade temps that is important

b4 this was like 65c I think, cant really remember. I think I put too much paste on it cuz my fans are clean. Will try again later.
