nice laptop! Im currently running linux on my laptop, IV had a bunch of different things happen to me when installing it. I'm not using ubuntu currently though, lucid puppy. Get on irc, network freenode, and there is an ubunto channel that could fix you right up(type /join #ubunto) quick, there very knowledgeable there and wont stop helping till your satisfied.
There should be a package somewhere in ubunto that says xchat, install that and then you can get into the irc network.

    x64 :).

When you install stock 8.04 everything works, then i got a popup that updates were available, i installed those and it still worked.

So not sure, maybe something went wrong.

Try it out on an USB stick :).

all the problems are caused by the ATI drivers. I changed 3870 to nVidia card.

the ati drivers aren't compatible with Mobility 3870 HD X2 , and unfortunately this is the gpu which comes in M17 , presently the stock drivers are the way to go and i seriously doubt that ati would be coming out with drivers compatible with the 3870 hd X2 as they have not done this till now.
You can verify what i'm saying on ati driver's page , there's a pdf with this info.

well there is a catalyst package for linux that suport crossfire on linux it's rather the fact that our card are the mobility variant that is not suported

also the card in the original m17 are 2 3870 so in theorie you could run on one only and make the driver usefull

i my self have 2 4850 in it they where offered as an upgrade but they are not suported ethier
