I've seen an M17 for sale for around €650 with the following spec:

CPU Intel Quad Core Q9000 2.00Hz
    RAM 4 GB
    VIDEO 1 ATI 512MB HD3870
    SCREEN WXGA 17 1440 X 900
HARD DRIVE KINGSTON SSD 64 GB V SERIES
2nd HARD DRIVE SAMSUNG 320 GB
    WINDOWS 7
    DVD RW AD 7590S
    UK KEYBOARD ILLUMINATED

How would this hold up today in terms of gaming? What would it play really well and what games would not stand a chance?

I'm interested in it purely because of the price and I also love the old style of the Alienware's. If I were to buy this, how far can I upgrade it to be a modern day beast?

google your GPU ( the hd3870m) with notebookcheck and you can find the performance you will get in games, but I don't think it will be really top :p

Id recommend going with dual 3870's or a single 4850. I tried to go dual 4850's and had an issue with a bad card but on MOST games, the single 4850 (1gb) out performance dual 3870's.
