There are two months of warranty left on my m9750 and it has two problems that I believe Alienware won't be able to fix. The Firewire jack has never worked and I believe batteries are no longer available for the 9750.

It is my understanding that the firewire port cannot be fixed so the motherboard will have to be replaced. If I send the computer to Alienware, what will they do? Replace my motherboard with a salvaged used one? What about the battery issue? Will they make me a good deal on a new M17x?

I am wondering how to proceed. I want a new computer and am favoring a Clevo x7200 unless Alienware gives me a good deal because of my warranty issues.

    Thanks for any input.

They'll tell you to get stuffed if you mention the battery. The battery is not covered by the extended warranty. One of the few parts that isnt covered!
As for your firewire port i doubt they'll replace the motherboard as the port isnt on the motherboard, it's on a seperate board which contains the hard drive sata connections, ethernet port and all the other ports on that side. They'll probably just replace that board and if and only if the port doesnt work then they'll replace the motherboard.

Thanks for letting me what to expect.

When I called Alienware support about the faulty firewire, we did several tests and they said I should send it in because it was probably the motherboard. However, I understand now it could be a solder joint or connector on that interface board you mentioned.

I just had my battery replaced under warranty on my m9750 because there was a charging system problem and the motherboard was killing my batteries. I ordered two batteries in Feb this year at~$60 each and they both got toasted due to this problem so they were both replaced under warranty, along with my motherboard and primary video card.

Thanks Tokaygecko. This is interesting. I wonder if my m9750 has the same problem to a lesser extent. My last new genuine Alienware battery only lasted about six months and then the cabacity went to about three minutes. One of my video cards got fried too but that was over a year ago and the replacement has held up fine. I only have a month left on my warranty.

Last Winter I looked for a new battery and couldn't find one but you are getting them from Alienware. I'll check with them again.
