After years of faultless service my M9700 has just decided to stop working. When the on button is pressed the hard drive light, dvd and touchpad lights come on for a moment but nothing happens.

I have tested both hard drives - ok, power supply is showing 19v output, the only thing that appears to be virtually finished is the battery, can this stop a boot up?

Your thoughts and ideas would be appreciated, many thanks.

Is your machine an AMD cpu M9700?
Does it have two video cards installed?
Bad batteries can stop the machine booting.
What happens when you remove the battery and boot with the AC supply plugged in?

    Thanks for your reply Dezire!

The machine has the Turion ML 44 cpu, dual Geforce Go! 7900GS cards in sli mode, two 200gb hard drives in raid 0.

I tried detaching the battery while plugged in to mains and pressing start button, but still the same I'm affraid.

Although it is not my main system anymore I would miss not being able to use it! I am not adverse to doing some investigative work inside the machine - I am familiar with computers, but just need some ideas on what to investigate!

If it comes down to it I would be prepared to change the mother board / cpu if needed, as they are still cheaper than buying a low end system to run my office software that I use on the M9700 at present! I just want to be sure what the problem might be before purchasing new parts

Usually, the first items to fail showing those symptoms in the M9700a are RAM, video cards and batteries.
In your case, removing the battery has made no change so you need to check RAM and video cards.
If you have a crosshead screwdriver that fits the screws on the back panel snuggly, you're good to go.

    Try this:
    Unplug AC power supply.
Remove battery. Leave it out during problem solving.
    Remove the back panel.
If you have two sticks of RAM. Remove one stick.
    Plug in AC supply.
    Turn on.

    If still no results.
    Unplug power supply.
    Remove installed RAM stick.
Install the RAM stick you first removed in the next slot.
    Plug in AC supply.
    Turn on.

    If still no results.
Remove video card heatsink and fan. There's 11 or 12 screws holding this in, plus a fan connector.

Unplug secondary video card. This is the video card furthest away from the cpu.
Looking at the picture above, the secondary video card is under the right leg of the heatsink.
There are two screws holding it in.
    Plug in power supply.
Turn it on, for no more than a minute. Then unplug power supply.

    If still no results.
Unplug primary video card and replace with the card you removed in the previous step.
    Plug in power supply.
Turn it on, for no more than a minute. Then unplug power supply.

    Report back here with results.

Yes, it looks like the motherboard is faulty.

Ok, well thanks again for your help. I have a spare sata caddy to keep my office documents that are on the drives in use, so will keep an eye on fleabay and see what parts are around.
