So I never bought a video-in device for my m17 when I custom ordered it, but am now in the position where I need to convert some vhs and hi8 tapes to a digital file format. I've looked around and found lots of really cheap (and worthless) usb capture devices, but I'm wondering if there's anything better, especially with the expresscard slot or whatever that slot is on the left side in front of the SD card reader slot.

I know this is an odd question and possibly miscategorized, but I'd really appreciate any help, thanks!

Firewire is probably your best route.

Take a look at Canopus/Grass Valley kit. They've been making excellent video capture solutions for years. I've used the ADVC300 in the past to do analogue to digital conversion. I was very impressed with it.
